Warez MP3s include tracks where idiots have taken 64 - 128 kbps MP3 tracks then converted them to higher bitrates, thinking it will sound better. It's got more bits now, right?

If you care about sound quality, you need to buy CDs and rip them yourself, preferably to lossless FLAC.

I use VBR LAME eNC versus CBR. Set lowest at 160 and highest at 320. Most of the music I listen to comes out about the same size or a bit smaller then a 192 kbps file would be, and it sounds almost identical to CD quality. And I DO have an awesome setup. Maybe you just use a crappy Encoder? Or your not using VBR, or both.

Sorry dude, I like my silence hi-fi. The entire song is equally important and deserves the same attention. VBR is crap. CBR320 or lossless.

I like to use monkeyaudio compression.
Just buy used cds in Ebay, they are hella cheap.

have a friend conduct a blind A B test. see if it is just in your head. if you really care about sound and the truth you will do this.

If you're complaining because the songs you download are 192K then too bad. Go buy the CD.

Yep. When you actually own it, you can rip the music at any quality you like. ;)
For reference, I find CDex to be one of the easier and faster programs available.
My whole CD collection is at 320Kb. I can hear a difference too.

You're bitching about the quality of downloaded mp3's?

Properly encoded, it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between mp3 and the original CD even on the best equipment. Most people just imagine a difference. Like 0roo0roo said, do a blind test -- the results might surprise you.

I encode mine at 192 with CDex and I can't tell any difference from CD... and I think that anyone who *thinks* they can tell the difference is crazy.

oh and on the net..sometimes there are cr@p rips. probably released by the riaa. but these are so obviously not normal..even the worst mp3 encoder wouldn't do that. its like they recorded off a low bit rate streaming audio site.

I can always tell a difference in the drums if it is below 264, but I live with it.

How can you enjoy the music if you're listening hard enough to hear a minute difference in one instrument?

Not trying to criticize, I just don't get people and music sometimes.

NO NO NO!

Do not start on the MP3 hating, I had this crisis about 10 or so months ago and it was hell, one minute I hated MP3s and wanted everything lossless and the next I was okay with them. This was around the time I had an ID3V1 and V2 tagging crisis too. I'm fu cked up regarding this stuff.

I finally calmed myself and decided -preset standard LAME MP3s are just fine and that I need lose no sleep.

I suggest you do the same. Or -alt-preset standard as everyone seems to use (what's the difference again?).

I played FLAC files on the same setup I played mp3s. Hardly a difference.

Ogg is similar to mp3 in that it's a lossy format you can encode to in varying bitrates, but it's newer and sounds better at a given bitrate. You might be thinking of flac (Free Lossless Audio Codec), which is a lossless format that saves some (but not much) space.

Problem with aac is it enjoys virtually no support outside of apple products & software.

FLAC?

I currently use LAME and EAC? What is FLAC?
