I finally built my new PC last night. I got everything but the sound card, but I couldn't wait any longer. I got the thing running, set-up the BIOS, formatted the HD, installed Windows 98 and installed the various drivers for Geforce, mouse, etc... I even installed some software. Right before going to bed, I decided to OC the damn thing.

I jacked up the FSB from 100 to 120 and rebooted.

DOH!

It powers up, the drives spin, but nothing happens. The monitor stays blank, so maybe the vid card is an issue. Never the less it doesn't get far enough for me to get back into the BIOS and fix the settings.

How do I get it back>?

i'm sure that some motherboards have dip switches on them that let you reset the fbs to default just for situations like this one
read your mobo manual should tell you if you have them
 
there is a Jumper for CLEAR CMOS you need to set that, reboot, then turn it off set it back and you're in.
In order to get my computer to boot up with 133Mhz Bus (266), i had to connect the L6 briges on the CPU with a conductive pen to lower the default multiplier, I also connected the L7 bridges to increase the power-on voltage to 1.85. This allows your computer to boot up into Bios then the Bios will take over and adjust it to the settings you choose.

Hmm, now you say you jacked up the FSB. Did you do anything to the dipswitches? With my A7V, if I change something in the BIOS and the system cannot POST as a result of that, then it will revert the BIOS to "safe" settings the next time I try to boot.

So for example, let's say I jack my FSB up to 120MHz and exit the BIOS. The system attempts to POST at 120MHz, but of course that doesn't work. Upon the next boot, it would revert to a 100MHz FSB and automatically show the BIOS configuration menu.

Maybe your system cannot even get that far, due to the fact that your RAM is now trying to run at 133MHz + 20MHz = 155MHz. That's just a guess. But if you messed with the dipswitches also, try putting them back to their default positions first. If that doesn't work, find the two solder points near the CMOS battery and short them with a bit of wire, perhaps a paperclip. Look in the manual for details on that.
 
Use the clear CMOS jummper,and next time when you overclock DONT go for the kill the first time.You may get it stable at 105mhz to 110mhz.I have the same problem if I set the fsb or the multiplier too high.
 
Do a little research as well before overclocking. Your using the KT133 chipset which is totally unstable beyond 110FSB, which of course would lockup in the BIOS.

I knew that going to 120 would probably not work, but I'm aggressive by nature and hoped I'd at least get it to post...

Anyone here successfully overclocked an Asus A7M266? im using a 1.2 200fsb that i would like to get to 266..

I've done something similar. Beer and working on computers don't mix. I've learned to wait and have the beer once I'm done. Clearing the CMOS does the trick.
 
MORE POWER! - exactly right.

When I get home tonight, I am going to get it back online and start over.

Tomorrow the world will know how far an unlocked Duron 600 (stock HSF) will go in an unmodified Enlight 7237 on an Asus A7V.
 
Always inch up on the limits. 2 MHz at a time is plenty for me. You'll see it get unstable before you can hurt anything.

I don't know how many times I can recall drinking, and waking up the next morning to have my computer just totally screwed.. haha, its all good.
 
Well, I got it to post at 1017, but Windows was filled with problems. I am absolutely rock solid stable @ 875.

When the CardCooler XT, Antec 80mm, &amp; 2CoolPC Plus arrive I will try again.

Next step - better HSF
 
Right now I have my 650 Duron @ 850 (8.5x100). Before I settled on this, I was jacking it up with the FSB, but I found that if I tried to go up too fast ...it would just lock, so I started going up a step at a time ...finally getting it to 107x8=856.
I may go back to fiddlin' with the FSB again later. Next I will probably just try for 900 (9x100)

Clear the CMOS either by taking out the battery for a few minutes, or using the jumper. Or try holding down the INSERT key when you reboot.
