I am a total newbie to plane tickets. How do I get cheap ones?

I want to go to Chicago on the Memorial weekend (May 28th-31st). I have been checking Expedia.com and Hotwire.com, and the cheapest I can find for 2 people (1 Adult, 1 senior citizen) is $219/ea. There has got be to cheaper tickets that that, especially if I am going to booking the flight way in advance. So where should I look for cheap tickets?

219 dollars for round trip tickets isn't bad at all. I doubt you'll be able to find them cheaper than that.

I've actually found its sometimes cheaper to go directly to the airlines site....

Saved a good $20 per ticket to NYC from Florida by going directly to Continental.com

It's generally cheaper to fly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you cant do that, try to make sure you're staying over a weekend.

$213.70 is the best I can find.
Here That's IAH to ORD. Flying in to Midway was more expensive everywhere I looked.

Regardless if you book it that far in advance....the airlines are well aware that it's going to be memorial day weekend....and will hike their prices accordingly.

In any case you can check qixo.com (which checks several airline sites directly).

I found them on Southwest's site for $119.00 each from Hobby to Midway.

Southwest choose "fun fare" or "promotional nonstop" for the lowest fares.

Certain days of the week typically have more travellers than others. Airlines will give discounts if you fly on certain days or at certain times. Best to call the airline direct for this. Although to save money in this way may throw your schedule all off. Airlines do not discount a whole lot on holiday weekend travel because they know they will sell the seats regardless.

Fly southwest. Can't get cheaper than that. They don't fly to O'Hare but they fly to Chicago Midway I believe....

Otherwise call a travel agent and see if they can find anything....

Right now is kind of not a good time to shop for airline tickets anyways. All the prices are bumped up because of spring break. Example. I normally can get a flight from philadelphia to toronto RT for $150. The last few weeks they were topping $230. They are starting to come back down in price though.
