Yeah, and he uses the name reference only once, but he says "Tim/Jim" - both his real name and his fantasy name... that's pretty weird :D

Why isn't he liked? Does he have some problems focusing or is it something more? Is it generally oblivious to what they are doing?

liked the jim/tim thing :)

"Tim/Jim" sounded good as I was typing it, probably due to the popular brand of jerky, "Slim Jim".

so his real name is "Slim Jim"? or is it just a nick name? is it because he is really skinny? or really fat?

He must have really sucked at his job to get two demotions. The company should have really just let him go. It is the nicer thing to do, because the demotion wouldn't show up on his resume when he looks for another job.

Well, I'm assuming that it's a private company, so as far as that goes they can do what they like with the personnel, demote, promote, whatever. No one is going to be able to tell them who to hire and who to fire. There's pretty much nothing you can do about it, because the way it sounds, you'll probably get canned too if you sympathize with what they think is a problem in the company.

It's kind of a long story, actually. When the VP (his boss) was applying at our company, he was also going for the job. At the time, he was the Director of IT and reported directly to the President. Well, he didn't get the job and it went to "Rob". This caused a little bit of tension between Rob and Tim. Part of it was because the Rob is particularly sensitive to people "knowing their place", and part of it was due to the Director not being used to taking orders from anyone but the President.

Over the past year, Tim has adjusted better than Rob, surprisingly. I actually knew the Rob before he started working here. He's a good guy - even to work for - but he has a small inferiority complex and is seemingly afraid that people don't see him the way he sees himself. It's easy to manage if you know how to approach the guy, but it's also easy to fall out of favor. On top of that, Tim doesn't focus well at all. He's more of an academic when it comes to technology than he is a truly useful contributor. He's in it for the knowledge and the science of it all, rather than to "get things done". Rob seized these traits in Jim and used them as justification to knock the guy down a few notches. Also, our company isn't quite in the black, and we've had some layoffs. I like Tim personally, but I can't believe there's any justification for his salary. If we have another round of layoffs, there's no question he'd be at the top of the hit list.

If you're not cutting it around here they just fire you. I haven't seen any demotions here ever.

There's a MSgt(E7) I know who has been unable to meet AF fitness standards. As a result, he's been demoted from Master Sgt to Technical Sgt(E6), and again to Staff Sgt(E5). I feel some sympathy for him because the man has a wife and child, but on the other hand, he has had years to meet the standard. The AF fitness standard isn't exactly that difficult to comply with either.

What a great post. :D

You might want to make somebody at the company aware that if Tim/Jim does quit, he has a good case for a wrongful dismissal suit. "Subtly" giving him the message he's not wanted isn't looked at kindly by the courts. They need to either directly tell him he's not performing up to par and explain what he needs to do to correct that slide, or let him go. This in-between stuff isn't completely fair.

Actually, let me temper what I've said about by saying that he would have a case up here in Canada. I realize that in the U.S. things are not quite the same.

I thought they just discharged those guys? They're letting him stay in?
