And I just broke my computer chair. Shit. I'm leaned back all the way most of the time, and it was just too much for one of the arms.

I only weigh about 240, which isn't *that* bad, but most non-big/tall chairs are only rated for like 225, and if im gonna get a good chair I don't want to worry about this again. I'm a bit worried though that although the big and tall chairs may be rated to like 400, that its mostly for sitting upright, which I usually don't do, and wasn't a problem with the current chair. I'm just worried that they won't be much stronger for prolonged leaning back, they don't really seem to have more substantial arms.

Actually I just found a link to this chair for $225
http://amzn.com/B001PMJZGW

Seems pretty good, 450lb rating, aluminum arms, and looks to be secured all along the small of the back, anyone have this?

Any recommendations?

Don't feel bad. I'm 220 (body builder) and the arm of my chair just broke. The Arm brace that connects the back to the seat gave out at the rear screw that goes into the seat. Snapped clean in half right at the screw hole. Made the back of the chair sag on that side.

Just picked this up at Office Depot:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...onded-Leather/

It was on sale for $129 in store.

One problem I had while chair shopping was that many chairs just don't lean back far enough.

If I had more will power than money I wouldn't be in this situation to begin with, but I simply don't.

Sweet cop-out, bro.

Seriously though. Move more, eat less. Requires next to no willpower. Come visit the Health and Fitness forum. There's a fat-loss sticky that could help you through everything. On top of that, the forum brings a great deal of support. 240lbs IS that bad and is significantly shortening your life.

Go to a tech site, be ostracized by fellow nerds for being overweight

240 is that bad? I work out a alot and weigh 230. I don't look skinny and I do have a bit of a stomach, but I still run and lift a ton. I fluctuate up and down as to what I LOOK like, but my weight always stays around 230.

Its strange as all hell actually.

Edit:
Btw, I get my chairs from the thrift shop. They may not be heavy duty, but for what I'm paying, who cares? You might be able to find something cheap and nice at an office surplus store also. If you aren't paying much, they don't have to last forever, and it's environmentally responsible not buying new crap to take up room.

the chair that broke isn't one of those Office Depot Realspace 9000's is it? They're mesh and look like Herman Miller Aeron chairs.

The back snapped off mine and I went flying, cut my leg on the bottom of my desk and have a permanent scar there now.

Turns out Office Depot recalled that model chair because of the weak back. I got a replacement from them and it had 4 bolts holding the back on instead of two.

It didn't break violently or anything, just as I was leaning way back the left arm cracked across 2 of the 4 bolts on that side. I can still sit in it, just no leaning

I dont get it. Your post title says you are a fat american and your thread is about breaking a chair due to your weight. Yet you don't want to address the fact that you are a fatass and instead want a new chair recommendation? Good luck with that.

I don't want to address it? Then I wouldn't have said so in the title, wise guy. I freely admit that I'm overweight but everyone keeps saying I'm in denial about it?

Oh well, I guess my hopes were a bit high in expecting anything productive out of ATOT

If you're sedentary, weight plays a huge role in overall health. If you're pretty active in aerobic exercise, being overweight can be little to no problem surprisingly. The major problem individuals who are healthy, but overweight, tend to have is with joint pain/osteoarthritis...

But yeah, it all depends on your height. If you're 5'8", then yes, 230 is that bad. If you're 6'3", then it's not such a big deal. However, if you're not that active aerobically, the increased body weight can contribute to hypertension, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, heart disease, risk of stroke, etc.

I finally broke down and bought the same chair that I have at work which is a Herman Miller Aeron chair. I found mine on Craigs list used for around $350. The chair works great, built very sturdy and very adjustable.

Your problem could be more of the leaning itself than the weight. My fiance is pretty tall and he has broken a computer chair from leaning back so he doesn't sit in mine as it is similar to the one he broke. I don't know what kind of chair he got to replace his though. He's had it for 4 or 5 years now.
