I am just a little bit angry at the fact that nvidia is charging money for the dvd decoder that they designed. Is right of me to be angry? Im not sure. But I was a little disapointed when I opened the box to my geforce 6200 and there was no Nvidia dvd software included anywhere. So when I took the time to get on the net and try to download it I found out that, It was going to cost me 30 bones. But I guess it's a way for Nvidia to earn a little extra cash.

You're mad that the manufacturer of your video card didn't supply software for watching dvds? Did you get mad when the tv you bought didn't come with a free dvd player?

No I wasn't mad at my tv manufacturer, The only reason why I am upset with Nvidia is that they boasted the new Dvd picture with theyre video cards, they were boasting awesome dvd playback quality. I guess I should have been more clear Im mad because the sharp clear image only works with theyre software. grrr!

It's almost as bad as microsoft.

Don't be too mad, their dvd decoder sucks anyways.

Really?
Yes, for me at least. Problems with button selection on menus, stuttering, pixelation, couldn't get SPDIF passthrough to work for the life of me.

According to people at AVSForum.com, the nVidia decoder is one of the best when it comes to picture quality when paired with FFDShow.

Note: You do NOT necessarily need the nVidia Decoder to use the built-in decoding and de-interlacing features of the card. The only thing that makes it special is the fact that it is the only one (that I'm aware of) that supports DirectX Video Acceleration (DxVA) right now, but I'm sure other ones will be released. Any decoder that uses DxVA will work, from my understanding.

EDIT: I used to have NVDVD 2.55 OEM and I really liked it. It worked very well for me. It wouldn't play certain DVDs though (like my Futurama DVDs and X-Men 2), so I couldn't use it. I now use Media Player Classic for all of my DVD-playing needs as I haven't had a single problem with it. The settings are nice and I just set both Dolby Digital and DTS to S/PDIF Passthrough (Audigy 2 ZS). My CPU (Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester) hangs around 30-35%, I think, while using VMR9 and watching The Matrix.

EDIT2: FFDShow is supposed to be very good at sharpening and rescaling the video stream. It is a program that runs alongside the DVD decoder (so it should work with any decoder) that modifies the video stream in real-time, allowing for sharpening or zooming or other effects. I haven't used it becuase I really don't know how to effectively use it and becuase my DVDs look nice when output to my 20" standard-def TV.

Ok... are you mad that your HDTV doesn't play DVD's? I mean... they ARE advertised as providing the best quality for DVD playback...

Just a reminder...

nVDVD != nVidia DVD Decoder.

nVDVD was a standalone DVD playing program from a few years back. It got up to version 2.55, and worked pretty well. Not necessarily better or worse than anything else, but it did come with most nVidia graphics cards of the GeForce4 through GeForce FX generations.

nVidia DVD Decoder is just a CODEC - you can't watch DVDs with it, and nVDVD doesn't work with it anyway (if you have both installed, and are watching the DVD on the nVDVD program, you are using the older CODECs that are built into that instead of the newer DVD Decoder).

I honestly don't know what all programs DO work with the new DVD Decoder (that is, btw, the thing you are talking about having to buy - or downloading a 30 day trial of), but I do know that:
[*]nVDVD does *NOT*, it still uses its built-in CODEC
[*]Windows Media Player 10 *does* - and it looks GOOD! (WMP9...I don't think does)
[*]ZoomPlayer Pro does, as well - that's what Anandtech used for testing with it when they gave the decoder CODEC such a glowing review. (Note that the review is given in context of the hardware-acceleration the GeForce6 cards can do with this decoder...that is completely irrelevant to anything but performance, though - the decoder will work on ANY DX9 card, including ATI cards)

Ummm.... I use TheaterTek 2.0 on my custom built HTPC to watch DVD's and I have found that using VMR9 Renderless is the best in terms of image quality. BTW, i think they charge for the dvd decoder just to cover the cost of licensing the technology from sony otherwise if they included it with the purchase of your vid card than the cost would have been added to the video cards price.
