I always skip at least one or two upgrade cycles

I got my phenom II last OCT (2010) and I'll make due til 2012 at least. BD has made the decision pretty easy. That six core part looks kind of cool. If I can scare up a cheap DDR3 mobo for it, I might try one.

You don't say.

Today, I did the laundry, and used cold water tide. Benchmarks will follow shortly on how long it took to clean the clothes.

My upgrade tactic.

Going from Core 2 to Core i5.
-Motherboard upgrade
-RAM upgrade
-CPU upgrade

Core i5 to Core i7 Sandy Bridge
-Motherboard upgrade
-CPU upgrade

Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge
-CPU upgrade

One less component every generation. :)

And the previous components are sold for 40-60% of the original price. Some components like RAM I pay little extra so with faster speeds, the next upgrade will be fine as well.

I went from 939 Winchester to upgraded Opteron 165 > E8400 > 2500k

So yea, I usually skip 2 gens and upgrade every 2 years or so.

E8400 lasted 3 years now (I believe)

(not counting my 2nd/3rd rig....

I have the exact same CPU as the OP but my system is a bit more outdated.

I can't overclock to more than 3.4 GHz, because if I increase the voltage beyond stock, CPU temp reaches 60C when running OCCT GPU and CPU tests simultaneously which is way too high. I need a new case with better airflow. Also I'm running DDR2 RAM so I need a new mobo and new RAM.

That's almost a compete system rebuild, which means I might as well switch to Intel next time. However, as the HardOCP benchmarks showed, games are very GPU limited at higher resolutions anyway, so I'm in no hurry to make the switch.

Still using a Q6600. For what I do I'm usually maxing out at 40% cpu load and 70% gpu load on a 5770. When I do encoding I'm usually afk so I dont really care how long it takes so that is no reason to upgrade. What I really want is 5700 series gpu, an i3-2100 level cpu, on a miniITX mobo, all for under $250 and 100 watts max system draw at the wall. Maybe the next xbox?

What I'm running right now can pull 300 from the wall, and no less than 100 at idle. With a little underclocking and undervolting, I think I can get an i3-2100 and a 6750 to run under 100 watts. But its just a lil more than I want to spend. I really wish I could get an i3-2100 with triple channel memory, and 800 radeon cores (ie an underclocked 6770).

I went to 2500K from Athlon X2 5400+, my longest upgrade cycle yet. Will probably upgrade to Ivy Bridge at a right price (maybe after first round of price cuts by Intel), since it should be just a matter of swapping CPUs. After that, for a new mobo, at least until Haswell or whatever AMD comes up with in 2013/14.

Hrm. Ignoring everything older than a K6 I went K6-2 --> Pentium 3 --> Pentium 4 --> K7 (and 2 other times) --> C2D --> Atom --> K10.5 (x6) Some of the machines I owned at the same time, and I have owned way too many K7 machines, the last of which I went w/ instead of splurging on a K8, which I later regretted quite a bit. Was planning on upgrading to BD just to play with, if nothing else, but I probably won't now, unless MC releases a cheap bundle, and/or it turns out the FX-4 are unlockable.

I upgraded from a pocket calculator to i7-2600k.

I can now do addition AND subtraction at instantaneously x 1.1

Also I upgraded my tamoguchi addon. I can now play DOS games and even...EMULATE MY TAMOGUCHI at playable speeds.

srsly..whats the point of this thread?

I have multiple PCs most of the time, even since the Athlon XP and Pentium4 days (still have both of them collecting dust). Recently sold off my AMD Phenom II X4 945 not long ago, and left with Core i5 760 and Core i7 930. Now deciding whether to sell off Core i5 760 or Core i7 930 and jump to either LGA1155 (wait for Ivy Bridge) and then wait for LGA2011 (with a Core i7 3820).

my 965@4ghz will probably keep me held over until I can just jump ship to a dual or quad core cell phone with 4GB of RAM and a desktop docking station.

Judging by the thread title, I was expecting a Dos Equis guy pun.

"I don't upgrade every year, but when I do I prefer......."

My current plan is a new desktop build every three years, with intermittent upgrades as I see fit. Current system in present configuration is 2 years old, and I'm thinking about upgrading the graphics for BF3 and perhaps 4 more GB of RAM. However, I can see myself sticking with what I have for another year.

ive been on almost every platform off intel for a while now.

604, 771, 775, 1156, 1366, 1155 (however the SB machine is mostly off.. :p )

i think tho i will skip wave one of 2011, and wait for the wave 2 2011 with better boards.

Im tired of getting bugged first version boards.. ive always had them since 775 (680i), 1156 (had to get new lotte cpu pins.) 1366 (had to wait 2 weeks for my gulftown bios), 1155 (had to RMA for B3)

so yeah.. im TIRED of generation 1 motherboards more so then generation 1 cpu's.

:\
