Background -
I'm the the loan IT person in my company. I handle EVERYTHING IT related for one corporate office of about 20 people, a remote office of about 15 people, and a little shy of 30 remote locations.
My company has a history of completely throwing things at me last minute without a chance of preparatoin. Last year they gave me a weeks notice about an office they rented outa suite on the other side of the state, and wanted 7 offices completely rewired with CAT5 and phone wires, and a PBX system put in in about 7 days time. As if that wasn't bad enough, two days after I got on site to do the wire feeding and putting in the wall jacks and what not, they sprung on me that they rented out another 6 office that they wanted phones, extensions, office equipment, and network connections ran for. Great....
After (4)four 20 hour days, I got everything in place.
Anywhooo...fast forward to this month. I knew we were looking at outsourcing our payroll to ADP(biggest payroll outsourcing company out there). I find out last Tuesday that we actually are going forward with the transition. On Wednesday of last week I talk with an implementation specialist about our existing equipment and network architecture. We decide that we can use a file server that we already have since it meets the specs needed for the ADP setup.
To get it working, I have to order 2 more SCSI drives for our server through Dell, have them delivered and installed when I get them. I put the order in on Monday. ADP requested that we have seperate hardware and a dedicated partition for the database for their software.
On Thursday of this week(yesterday) I find out that we are going live on Monday at 7:00 am. As of Thursday, I have no software, no hard drives, and no clue how the fsck how to even begin to implement the Oracle database and client applications for the ADP program.
Around 4:00 Thursday afternoon I get a package from ADP. It's the wrong database setup. We were going with Oracle. We got a SQL based database package. FSCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I call them up, sit on the phone for an hour and finally get it across to them that we had signed up for the Oracle software.
This morning(friday) I finally get my drives and the software for ADP. No instructions, and no contacts for WTF I need to set this stuff up.
I have 3 different bosses all coming to me asking when I'm going to get the software installed. I have no idea. Our ADP account rep doesn't know jack sh!t, and the techs for ADP haven't set up a time to go over the install instructions with me that should have been done a week ago.
So, I've got about a 6 hour window to do something that should have take place over a week long period. By 10:30 this morning, I think I developed 3 ulcers, and emitted more curse words than I have in the last three months. While I was waiting for ADP to figure out how they were going to get somebody set up to help me with an Oracle database install, I was getting the SCSI drives installed, set up as a container in the Raid controller, formatted, and prepped for use. At about 12:30 I finally found out who was going to help me install the Oracle database and show me what was needed to be done for the client level applications on the end user PC's.
I started on the server stuff at about 2:00 this afternoon. It took me till about 4:00 to get things finished up on the servers. I had to take that file server down for the time because of multiple reboots. At 4:00 when the server was done, I had to tie up end user machines to do client loads for training on Monday morning at 7:00 AM.
And the worst part of it all, my end users had the gall of getting on my ass because I had to take down a server for a couple hours. I get a 6 hour window to do something that should have taken place over a week, and they have the audacity to bitch at me for inconveniencing them for a couple hours.
I was so fscking pissed at my employers for completly throwing this at my feet without any forwarning in the first place, and then I was lambasted by end users for slowing them down.
I damn near had it. Almost threw in the towel and walked out.
Thank you for allowing this little space in the cyberworld to blow off steam. Without it, I think I'd spontaneously combust in a fury of rage and hatred.
