i took a small nap in my room at my parents house (everyone was gone but me) and i was woken up by my own coughing and gagging. my room was absolutely FILLED with smoke.

i woke up in seriously zero time, fully aware of the situation and trying to figure out what to do about it. i did a quick scan of my room and noticed smoke coming out of the vents and under the door.

small background story - i burned half of the house down when i was 8 and ever since then my whole family cracks jokes about me being a pyro.

back to this topic - i thought to myself "omg its happening again". i frantically ran around the house looking for the cause of the fire (the entire house was filled with smoke by now) but i couldnt find anything. 2 doors were locked so i touched the doorknobs, neither was hot, and then i busted them down. still nothing.

i ran to the pull-down stairs for the attic and took a peek up there - still no fire. i ran down to the crawl space and again found nothing. now i was like WTF? my house is filled with smoke and i cant find where its coming from.

now for all of you who have never experienced anything like that, your blood pressure and heart rate skyrocket and you basically go numb because you are so freaked out. i stubbed my toe on the fridge while i was running through the kitchen and didnt even notice it until later. its one of those feelings you cant understand unless you are in the situation.

after i was sure nothing was on fire inside, i went outside and looked around. then i noticed an air conditioning truck in the driveway. i went around back to the a/c unit and a guy was working on it. he said the heat exchanger puts out a lot of smoke the first time you use it.

ok everyone all at once - HUGE sigh of relief.

actually it doesnt smell at all. i opened all of the windows and turned on the ceiling fans...it cleared out in about 15 minutes and the smell is totally gone.

on the other hand i'm glad the house is alright...

we lost our house 100% with no house insurance when i was 14 or so. Dad had inherited family homestead from grandparents and let the house insurance on our place lapse for one month - the month our house burned to the ground.

insurance FTW.

some family photos were saved as my brother-in-law ran into the house as beams were starting to fall.

thanks man. i appreciate the thoughts.

losing everything made me into a packrat for about 10 years. when i met my wife and she started to get to know me, she realized i always had boxes and boxes of junk in tow whenever i moved. i literally kept everything - EVERYTHING. even garbage! ie. she found a shoebox with empty envelopes - not plain ones - i'm talking like empty envolopes from old mail!! :Q

anyway, not to threadjack. all is well :) thanks

i am cracking up now, because of the fact that your family had pretty much chirped you and gave you a complex about being a pyro...

for you to wake up from your nice nap and smell smoke is a kinda funny image

cheers man

VERY VERY glad that your house wasn't on fire :)
