but anyways its not worth getting thrown in jail for assault, you should of just told him and moved along.

as always its always better to try to avoid a confrontation whenever possible, but of course be ready to defend yourself if need be.

like you said, you dont know what he might have in terms of diseases, of course he has nothing to lose.

Yeah, that's why I tried to avoid fighting at all costs, even when he (I think) took a swing at me, and then kicked me.

I grew up with two brothers who are both my size now too. I can fight pretty good :)

Exactly, I can't believe the praise the OP is getting here. There's no reason to acknowledge someone who's mentally crazy and try to escalate it further, which the OP was doing. What did he gain from acknowledging the homeless person, besides a slight ego boost?

Whenever you engage in a potential altercation with someone, physically or verbally, you automatically stoop to that person's level..

Ignoring + keeping your back to someone who is threatening you makes you a pacifist idiot. PARTICULARLY when you are responsible for not only your safety but that of your family.

Wtf you talking about. Some hobo comes up to you and tries to interupt your conversation doesn't mean you have to shoot the shit with him. Always just a tragic tale and a plea for $$$. So the OP ignores all his nonsense and was perfectly content to walk on by. Only after this hobo cried out, "That's it, I'm gonna f*ckin' kick your ass!", did he turn around because he didn't want to get jacked from behind. Who the hell wouldn't get ready to defend both himself and his wife after hearing some crazy fuck off the street shout out he's going to mess him up? Don't give that crap that, Oh NOES, "whenever you engage in a potential altercation with someone, physically or verbally, you automatically stoop to that person's level," for shame, for shame. You have a potentially crazy hobo saying he's going to fuck you up and kill you, and you're going to just keep on walking so you can be blindsided by him? lol. What world are you living in.

Kick hobo guy in the nads. Punch hobo guy in the belly. Elbow hobo guy in the nose.

Keep on walking, get on bus and go home.

Wow. Are homeless people rare or something where you live... I walk by about 4/5 "regulars" daily asking for change or whatever. About 3 of the are crazy and will yell something offensive, rascist or crazy. I probably couldn't take any of them cause I'm small, but even if I were bigger, I wouldn't touch them with a 10 yard stick cause they're probably hopped up on drugs or got a shiv in their pockets. Lot easier to just ignore them.

Like hell their isn't.

If said mentally crazy person literally threatens my life while I am on the street with my family then I am going to be getting some serious "situation awareness" and actually considering pulling my concealed pistol.

Mentally crazy person threatens me why you walk alone, I ignore it. Mentally crazy person hurts, injures or kills me.

Mentally crazy person threatens me why I walk with my family, I ignore it. Mentally crazy person hurts, injures or kills my wife/child.

I might risk the first scenario. I damned sure won't risk the second one though. If I am with my family and some nutjob threatens my life without provocation then I will consider my family to be in danger and the nutjob, not I, will have escalated it to the next level.

When a bum threatens your life while you are walking with your wife, you trust that whole "ignoring" tactic. Personally, I will trust my .40 cal sub-compact. Good luck with that though.

Haha no. Dude it's Vancouver. We get all the rest of Canada's homeless. The area I was in usually doesn't have many, but it was after a football game and they come out in full force those nights. In the day you might see one guy pushing his cart of cans around on that street, at night perhaps a few more. I think I passed 4 or 5 during that walk, most of them just sit there with their hat out, or say "god bless" when you walk by, but every once in a while you get a nutjob.

Uh, I ignored him and walked past him. Only when he came at me did I turn around. Would you really just sit there if someone came over to your place and started taking all your stuff?

hehe...there's a guy outside of GM Place that just chants "Beer beer beer..." all night after the Canucks games. He's pretty freaking funny just because he's so loud, and honest about what he's gonna do with the money you give him. :D

I have to agree with Silverpig though - they seem to come out in full force right after big sporting events and they're everywhere!

Wow, man, glad you're okay. Report it if you can because he might remember and try it again with a knife someday.

You folks in BC need to start catapulting your bums into the ocean. I don't know how accurate the news we get on the east coast is about that stuff, but it sounds like it's becoming a bit of an epidemic.

Well the thing is a lot of them aren't "our bums". I think about 30-35% of the bums here are from Quebec. There are plenty from the other provinces too.

It's a touchy issue. There are a lot of people who make a lot of noise in support for the homeless. And there are honest stories of guys who got laid off in a slow time, got behind on some payments, lost their wife, lived out of their car for a few weeks looking for work, then ended up on the street. I'm sure at least a good percentage of them don't want to be there and would make good use out of a second chance, but then there are the militant assholes like this guy who ruin it for them.

The big thing here right now is the city/province/feds are spending billions here for the olympics. And damn is it ever money well spent. However, the bleeding hearts question how we can spend this much when there are homeless still on the street.

One of the loudest noisemakers is a guy by the name of David Cunningham. He's the leader of this group called the APC (anti-poverty committee or something like that). They stage disrupting protests, demonstrations etc, and are very vocal in the media. It got to a point where he got some airtime on a local radio station and he totally blew it.

The announcers asked him why he felt like he deserved free money and a free place to live. He said that he didn't make much money and needed help etc. The announcers asked if he had a job. He said he worked for the APC. They asked how often he worked. He said 2 days a week. They said that there are plenty of jobs available here, and asked why he didn't work more. "Eh, none of those jobs are suited to me."

So because he doesn't want to work, he feels he's entitled to free food, money, and a place to stay, and thinks the same for everyone living on the streets.

So while public opinion was leaning towards the APC for a while just because so many people are disconnected with what's going on in that part of town, it seems the tide has turned against them because of that radio interview and incidents like mine.

Interesting...which way did you go after the game? I went down Beatty St. to the Skytrain and I only came across one homeless person in a wheelchair. No threat at all.

Just to clarify, the homeless problem is bad here, but it's a lot worse in Victoria. I went to uni there, and the downtown area is a fucking nightmare near Chinatown - double the amount of hookers, users and homeless I've seen compared to Hastings St.

Those APC people give the homeless a bad name. Remember the time they trashed that MP's office and it was taped and put on the news? WTF. I feel for the people who are legitimately on hard times, but it's so tough to tell who's actually needy and who is just a lazy scam artist. So I ignore street people too. Props to you for trying to ignore this guy and resisting the urge to plow him.

I seriously think we need to open more mental health facilities. Ever since the budget cuts in the 90s, a lot more of those people are now on the streets where they don't belong. Get them back inside under supervision and on meds, and that will go a long way towards reducing our homeless problem.

I agree with everything you have said here. I live in Victoria, and the homeless are abundant. Many of them do belong in a psych ward, but the politicians have chosen to close these facilities and let the cities deal with the wacked out freaks.

We may choose to give to a homeless shelters, but I will never give any money to someone asking for a handout.

hobos are rampant here, as are homeless/crack head in general. It's a beautiful city...just we have some crap here. The most common fights aren't so much hobo vs citizen, but two going at it in a 4 way intersection over who's street it is.

We also have quite a bit that just 'fall' into traffic and get hit.

I heard that if you get the hobo blood in your blood stream you end up becoming one.
I knew this guy who was on a business trip in SanFran. He was just walking down the street and all of a sudden this hobo jumps out of an alley and bites him! Like he really gnawed at the guy's arm. By the time some people came to pull the hobo off, the blood was already in him... He tried going to the hospital but couldn't help him. Two hours later he was wandering the streets of SanFran asking for spare change.

The poor bastard had a wife and kids back in Montana. Now she's trying to raise the kids while dealing with the loss of of her husband to hoboculosis.
