I'm on the ATOT medical plan. Anytime I have a problem, I post the question on ATOT and do whatever people ask me to do.

I second this. A friend of mine had a low grade fever that her docs though was nothing, but it wouldn't go away for weeks. Two months laters she finally got a horrid diagnosis, Leukemia.

Also, this might seem obvious but if anyone ever starts having random parts of their body go numb for no apparent reasons, go the to ER stat. This happened to me ~ 1.5 years ago and it turned out I had Guillain Barre syndrome. It took me almost 6 months before I could walk properly again.

And OP, I am glad you are ok.

some years back, probably about 10ish, my mom had meningitis, realllyyy bad. she also gets really severe migraines so at first she just thought it was that. she was in the hospital for over a week and i was terrified to go and visit her. she looked like death. she had meningitis once as a child also and the doctors said something like that if she hadnt gotten to the hospital when she did, even 20 minutes later, it could have killed her. scary scary.

then, the shingles thing. my father gets shingles. I remember as a kid, he would get them fairly often. at least once a year, and it was always really awful and painful. but he seemed to really tuff it out like a big strong man. its pretty nasty and very contagious. so in regards to whoever saying it is uncommon for shingles to reoccur, not in my dads case!

yikes though. im glad youre kicking some meningitis assssss

I have had 3 bouts of shingles since I contracted Chicken Pox at the age of 30 (that was exciting). All from extreme overtraining when combining intense lifting routines with intense cardio and cutting. Not healthy, I know, and I learned my lesson... or so I thought. Only my first bout came with a remarkable rash.
That's interesting. When I got shingles it came on 1-3 days (can't remember exactly, it was mid-90's) after a workout in which I did something I never do, which is squats with a barbell. It was intense and I surmised that somehow the two were connected. I ran this by some folks (including doctors) and they thought it was just coincidence, but your comments lend credence to my suspicions. Maybe the stress on my backbone initiated the viral outbreak from my vertebra. I've never attempted a single squat since! AFAIK, though, I've had no shingles recurrence but I think I should keep the possibility in mind.

Lots of people die each year from Herepes Simplex Meningitis and Encephalitis.

While HSV-1 is a common Herpes link for Meningitis, Zoster is kind of just as common. What ends up happening is the body gets shingles, but instead of presenting shingles on the skin, it is activated in the spinal column, which in that case usually ends up resulting in meningitis or encephalitis.

Wiki'd how Zoster works, but I knew it was the link between chicken pox and shingles. didn't know you could get shingles without having the characteristic rash.

You've had THREE recurrences? That's extremely unusual, have you had any other unusual diseases?

It's rare, but not THAT rare. Read the others in the last few posts who have had, or know people, with recurring shingles.

No other unusual diseases here. My body just has trouble with the Herpes Zoster virus. Probably because I caught Chicken Pox at such a late age (33ish) and my body didn't have years to get used to it. My immune system didn't mature while having to deal with the virus like most people's did. As with all Herpes viruses, outbreaks diminish after time.

Well, shingles is not contagious unless someone who has never had Chicken Pox comes in contact with one of the rash blisters... and then they get the chicken pox, not shingles.

I would think this accurate.

I had a nasty bout of viral meningitis in the summer of 1997. Spent 11 days in the hospital, lost 50 lbs in about 2 weeks (220 to 170), couldn't walk, etc. It was insane. The most 'supernatural' event in my life happened to me during this time, which made it even more nuts. I had to learn to walk again when I was recovering, which was something I'll never forget, nor take for granted ever again.

Glad to hear you're OK, Amused. Life can be a real bastard...it's good to hear you were able to show it who's boss. :)

I had meningitis (viral IIRC) a few years ago, man that messes you up for a little while. I have pictures sitting with my kids shortly after I got out of the hospital and my eyes are pretty void. I pretty much slept for about a day and a half straight except for the damned nurses coming in to check on me every hour or so.

Glad the danger point is over for you Amused. 15 inch biceps huh? I might have you beat at least for a short while :) (I'm also 41).

It's scary how fast I am shriveling up. At this age muscle is lost FAST when you stop lifting.

I knew there was some reason that I never started!

Ah! But the upside is that when I lose muscle mass due to injury or illness, I become NORMAL rather than looking like a concentration camp survivor. :p

Glad to hear you're ok Amused. And I bet the HZ virus was triggered by too much High Fructuse Corn Syrup. ;)

Naw, probably that whiff of second hand smoke I got outside the mall a few weeks ago. Or maybe the MSG in the Chinese takeout.

But my main bet is on the EM fields from my phones and appliances! :Q
