I almost decapitated myself yesterday

Fortunately I didn't, here's the story

Just got to my buddy's house in PA, decided to burn some time zipping around his farm/very large yard on his 4-wheeler. We go for a quick lap, with me ridding behind him. He then turns it over to me to give it a go. This is my first time driving one, so he shows me gas/brake/shift yada yada. So great, I'm off, slowly at first, getting used to shifting (pulling up or pushing down) so I make one lap, stop chat for a min. Decide to do another, and of course my confidence was way to high after the first lap, so down this stretch where right before a hairpin, I freak out. I start going to fast and I am on the brake and shifting UP not down ... I then go barreling into a horse fence(you know the ones that are just wires). I got very fortunate that the wires broke away and that my helmet took much of the abuse, and thankfully I got on the brakes when I did. I don't remember anything past, "BRAKE!!! SHIFT!!! OH SH!T"

My friend said that he found me next to the 4wheeler with the helmet off!! I guess I talked with him and he guided me inside where his parents took me to the ER. First thing I remember is sitting in the car, and after that laying on a bed. They did some cat scans, and made sure I was ok. Was only in the hospital for 3-4 hours.

I have a concussion, a very large abrasion on my neck (from where the strapped on helmet was ripped off), and bruises on my upper body/shoulders.

Cliffs:
Got to friends house, decided to burn some time on 4-wheeler
First time driving one, so friend gives me 4-wheelers 101
First lap goes fine
Second lap doesn't go fine, I drive straight into a horse fence
ER - I have a concussion and abrasions

Yea, sucks. I am lucky to still have a head after hitting the fence, so I will happily take this over the alternative. Moral of the story: learn the equipment better before you try to go too fast.

I will hopefully have pics later today, as it will aid in telling everyone the story of my stupidity (both online and off)

So anyways, commence with flaming about me being a stupid kid

EDIT: 5/30

Here are some Pics I took on my camera phone. The quaility is pretty bad but it was the best I had (Didn't know my friend had his digicam with him).

My Neck (Kinda gross)
Another Pic of my neck
Helmet that saved me
Helmet again
Pic my friend took with his camera later in the day

Also corrected my spelling mistakes. Thanks Pepsi ;)

Damn man, you're lucky. (And stupid, too! :p) I did something similar when I first learned how to drive a snowmobile. My gf was on behind me and we were following her father who was in a 700c sled; we had a 600. I didn't know where we were going so I was trying to stay up with him. He pulled away on one stretch, and I sped up to try to catch him. Before I knew what was happening, a huge snowbank appeared in front of me. I barely was able to brake before I hit it, which catapulted the sled and both of us into the air about 10 feet. We did some somersaulots midair and the snowmobile landed nose-first into another snowbank a few feet away. Very frightening. (But fun too!)

I bet only 1 out of 10 people around here would even have been wearing a helmet. Good decision!
