Actually I think I used a screw that was too big, which happened to be in the same bag as the motherboard mounting screws. Now there is a screw that is forced half-way into a stud and the motherboard is kind of tilted or something. How can I get it off? the screw won't come out of the stud. I dont wanna dremel it off because I'm wary of sparks and metal shards around the mobo. what to do?
thanks

Is the stand-off close to an edge where you could get a wrench, needlenose pliers or a pair of those needle nosed vise grips on it? I would guess you will have to keep it from turning in order to back the screw out.

If the mobo tray is removable, maybe removing it will allow you to turn the mobo to get better access.

I think you could get away with the dremel tool if you shroud the mobo with aluminum foil. I would be extra carefull of static though as aluminum is quite conductive.

Maybe wrap the board in wax paper and them cover with foil. Tape around the screw hole you need to get at.

A pair of dikes aren't going to help much with screwing a stud...

Oh wait...is this neffing or thread crapping?

If you can take the motherboard/plate out of the case you can take all of the screws and "studs" lol out and turn the motherboard to the left loosening the "stud" up and taking the motherboard, with the "screwed stud"-lol off so you can get a wrench/pliers on to the stud and a screwdriver/wrench on to the screw. If you cant do that get a dremmel and cut the head off of the screw and "blow" that sucker real good- that will get the shavings off of the sensitive areas.

You should be able to visualize any left over metal in the case to get it off

Sorry for the "lol's" i just couldnt keep from laughing. Ive also "screwed a stud that was too small too" was able to use needle nose and screwdriver to remedy the problem.

This is really pointless. Even if you "screwed a stud that was too small" (LOLOLOL)...there are still plenty of other "small studs to screw" (HAHAHAHAHA) left in the motherboard.

Man, i am cracking up!

In most of my mobo's, I don't screw more than 4 of the small studs anyway.

Sometimes if the mobo is an older, crappy one, I only screw 3 of the studs.

Only if it were a really nice, good, new mobo, I would screw 5 or 6 of the studs to make sure everything fit right.

Dang that just sounds to out of whack...woops....

Anyway, just leave it, don't mess with it. Just screw a different stud. HAHAHA

I hope my advice helps, and that you can figure it out.

This has gotta be one of the funniest thread titles ever...hehe.

gotta agree, it's a severe temptation, but............

the dremel option may be your best bet, but ground your motherboard so that you don't get a static buildup. Get a strong shop-vac and position the intake close to the work area. Keep the dremel speed low so that you're not throwing alot of material.

an option I would try first (since the head is still out and strong suction isn't really advisable close to sensitive equipment :Q ....sorry, couldn't resist) is to use a set of long duck billed vise clamps that might allow you to clamp onto the screw head and twist it out.

there's also a variety of an extractor that will allow you to clamp onto the head of a screw and using friction, twist it out; looks like a regular screw driver but with a small 3-4 bladed clamp that tightens through the handle. good luck.

Actually, I think this title is tied for first.

If you remember a few months ago, there was a title called "My penis fell off". The guy was talking about his voodoo 3 drivers I think.

Well, you're screwed, that's all i can say. Worse comes to worse, just leave it. If you can't get it off it's not going anywhere.

this happened to me once, just get a slot screw driver and prop the screw head up as far as you can and then grab the screw head with some needle nose pliers, and unscrew it with them, while applying upward pressure

MINI VISE GRIPS! Clamp those suckers straight on to the head of the screw, with the vise grips in line with the screw, not at an angle, theres nothing you cant do with vise grips :)

Slacker beat me to the mini-vise grip thing. That's gotta be your best bet.

And from now on, watch where you stick your, um; screw. :Q

LOL. The funniest part was that a few people didn't get that I made the thread title on purpose. It seemed to work at getting peoples attention! hehe

Real question? What are you smoking? I got the answer I needed, if diagnol cutters don't work I will try holding it with pliers, or a mini vise, and forcing the screw back out.
Thanks for the help
