I didn't mean to buy this 7800GTX, but I did for $300. Will this card hold its value decently well, and more importantly, will it give good performance for $300?

If it was brand new (read: sealed), that's not a bad deal. Of course, for $300, you're entering 7900GT range. If they weren't so scarce, I'd be kicking myself for that purchase.

It was used, but I have tested, and there is no artifacting or anything wierd, so it is good.

I was randomly bidding on cards for low prices in the hope of winning one and being able to sell it and make some money. I did pay for it, it is a done deal. I just don't know if the performance is worth the upgrade. I had a 6800GS, and there seems to be not much of a defference between the 2, though I did figure out that instead of loading to my 2GB RAM, BF2 is loading to disk, and that doesn't help much for framerates.

Gaming review sites say that BF2 can take more than 1GB RAM if it is available, and when I see task manager, it says that 5??MB total is used. So I would hope that it is running off of disk. To fix it, since I have the affinity optimizer that someone here made, it lets you start games with high priority, so I will try that.

The GTX should about equal the performance of 2 GSs, especially if you overclock it a little . . .

Yup. I think the 7900GT o/cs a bit better and you can get a brand new 7900GT for that price. But you've already paid for it, it's definitely a good replacement for the 6800GS. May as well use it.

Regarding keeping it's value - it should hold decently until late summer/fall. After that, ATI is releasing their midrange upgrade to the X1600XT (supposedly 10% faster than the X1800XT). In the fall (more likely close to Christmas) is the R600/G80 launch. Once midrange versions of those come out the value will sink like a stone, but that's alway the case.

So, at the present time, that's not a terrible purchase. But in August if you're concerned about value, I'd look to sell it.

Probably not the optimal thing to do, but not terrible either. If you want to go SLI I'll sell you my 7800GTX for 200 bucks

If you bought it to use it, then not a bad deal.

But if you bought it to re-sell, then know that you can get a 7900GT for the same price or just a little more..
