As stated, I now have my 2405fpw and am very happpy. I am running it with 2 machines, one VGA, one DVI along with a KVM for mouse & keyboard. What an amazing display!

The two cards I have are the AIW 9600XT and the AIW 9000 Pro. Initalliy I ran my "main machine" with the 9600xt because, well, it was already in there, and it was a faster card. Unfortunately, the 9600 is VGA only, and I began to notice a marked difference between VGA & DVI, so I swapped cards. Believe it or not, the AIW 9000 Pro is holding its own. I don't play any games, and I did have to add another case fan because the disply would periodically blank when playing full screen video, but all in all, it looks pretty good.

I am, however, going to want to upgrade to a quality AGP card powerful enough to give me more head room with the hig res 2405. And I want a TV tuner with it. But I really don't wish to spend more to upgrade MB to PCI-E.

What is a good card that will push this disply well, mostly for video, business apps and such, but for the occasional game as well? It doesn't have to be a brand new model. How would the AIW 9800 pro handle the 2405 for my purposes? Also, after paying for the 2405, I'm not looking to spend a bundle.

Thanks for any pointers,
Meph

The 9800Pro AIW isn't much faster than the 9600XT AIW. There would be little reason to upgrade. I don't see why you want to unless you are finding games running too slow. If that's the case, the 9800Pro AIW won't do 1920x1200 smoothly in most games anyway. You only have very few options if you want an included TV tuner, in which case I'd recommend the AGP ATI X800XT AIW or X850XT AIW.

edit: I see you say push the display well (not in games, Windows usage only) I don't see why your 9600 doesn't. The only reason a card couldn't power a high res LCD monitor for 2d only is if the monitor requires a dual-link DVI output (mostly only available on higher end cards like the 7800GT), which I'm 95% sure the 2404FPW isn't one of them. Some cards also have a problem with high res DVI but it might be able to be corrected through drivers (something to do with a frequency that is a bit unstable for the video card).

You were willing to spend that much on a monitor, but can't spare less than $200 for a PCI-E motherboard and A64 processor??

Depending on who you listen to, I did hear that theX800XT was a great card (better than the 850?), but it ran quite hot. But actually, the card I want to replace is a AIW 9000 Pro, which I hope would be a nice step up to the 9800.

That said, and given that the cards seem to cost the same right now (I believe...), would you recommend the X800XT over the 9800? ANd if so, why?

Thanks,
Meph

And at least another $200 or $300 minimum for the card? That adds up to another $500 or more, and given that I've just had to replace much of what I own due to Hurricane Katrina, another $500 is a big deal.

The X800XT is about the same price as the 9800? Definitely go with the X800 then! It is faster and a generation newer. And IIRC the X850XT is a generation ahead of that, so that would be the fastest and best card you could buy in AGP right now. The 9800 is still a decent card but only worth buying now used such as from the FS/FT forum, because retail prices are up in the range of much faster and newer cards. Check out the FS/FT forum anyway for any AIW cards, or if you want to expand your options, follow Lord Banshee's advice with getting a separate TV tuner card.

Thanks, duragezic for the opinion. It helped me make a decision for the X800xt.
And anyway, even compusa has it for $299.

Thanks again,
Meph
