I absolutely dislike Windows XP.

I figured this would go in OT as opposed to OS since its more of an opinion:

Way too much fluff. Sticking with windows 98se for now. It actually runs slower than 98 did! My favorite dos game doesnt work at all (blood) !

Hopefully I can work this out, but its going to take a long time to get used to. :(

win xp takes some time to get used to. There are ways to get rid of all that fluff... win9x sucks more than xp though. I have to deal with both at work, and both OS's give me problems, but at least xp gives me less...

What in the world was wrong with XP?

Did you try running the games in the emulator mode?

I love XP, I would never go back to any other OS.

I dont like it either, but I've been to lazy to switch.

Windows 2000 is probably the best OS MS has ever made.

XP's interface is by far the ugliest I have EVER had to deal with. Makes me want to throw up. Right now I have a nice (really nice) skin, plus I've disabled all of the fluf, so I can use it....

So far I like XP, the only real gripes I have are the over-simplified security & file sharing. Haven't found a way to turn it back to 2K's system, though I know it's possible.

I WANT to be able to specify which users have what access on my PC.

Other than that I like it.

i bought a router yesterday, and it was plug and play. i didnt even need to set anything up. i plugged it in, and boom, it worked.

now if i wanted to setup a ftp, or something else, that would be another story.

Right click, properties, themes, then scroll down to find the "Windows classic" and use that. It'll convert you back to Win2k's interface.

Everytime you talk out about Microsoft, you make dead Ghandi cry. The more I learn about nix, the more I wonder if there is more to Windows than games and ease.... Seems like most things run better on Nix, just harder than hell to get to....

Viper,

There is a microsoft knowledge base article that talks about turning on file security... another way to do it that most people don't know about is to boot the system into safe mode... login as administrator (not just a user with admin permissions), voila, you will find that file permissions for users is there!

PS, I tried setting up my little sister on my Mom's XP computer as a restricted user, but even after enabling file permissions she had problems running a lot of games... in the end I just made her an administrator, and restricted access to the dialup internet account to my mom's login.

This has nothing to do with themes.

Thanks. :) I'll try to switch it this weekend. I may end up going back to 2K for that reason alone, I don't like having to make a dozen changes to Windows to make it (relatively) secure.

I want to turn the security settings back to 2K's methods. User Accounts in XP is by default a useless piece of trash compared to 2K's default setup. 2K is a bit daunting at first, but it is very capable.

Going off-topic to Viper's problems:

Do you have problems with the account user groups? Windows XP Power Users, for example, is very different from Windows 2000's and Windows NT 4.0. You might wanna check that.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're talking about Viper but might as well give it a shot.

Tools --> Folder Options --> View --> Uncheck "use simple fire sharing"

More options will be opened up in the sharing & security menu.

haha that ghandi thing was funny :p

and yeah, most unix style os's are far more capable than windows, its just that no one supports or develops for them. of course that leaves it to the open source community which isnt a bad thing IMO.

its just that MS seems to be more and more power hungry all the time.....and most people do nothing about it, they continue to support a company that screws them time and time again

anyways, back to the subject :p ;)

That took care of part of my gripes. Thanks. :) I'm sure there's a similar option to bring back proper user management, but I have not found it.
