I'm looking at the i95exitguide site and it looks like 2 different stops are suggested:

Santee, South Carolina
Savannah, Georgia

But then all I get is a list of hotels, restaurants, and shopping nearby.

Which of those 2 areas are nicer to stay overnight?

edit:
oops, Santee is too soon of a stop. Need to pick some place further south.

Savannah can get real sketchy real quick. I would think Santee would be better safety wise. I love staying in Savannah near the water but that is not exactly close to I 95.

Okay scratch Santee off the list. That is only a little over 3 hours from when I start, but the total trip based on speed limit is 11 hours. If Savannah is sketchy, then what are good options just north or south of it?

why is Savannah sketchy?

I was just there for a week a few months ago and the only thing I thought that might kill me was the kindness of random strangers...

I live in Chicago so maybe my view of sketch is different but I wouldn't worry about it imo.

Savannah on the river is nice and the further away from the river you go the worse savannah gets. Any hotel on Bay St., River St. or the Westin across the river is pretty good to great. It's about 15 minutes off of I-95. For shopping/eating just walk down River St. and you'll probably find something you like.

The next logical stops south would be Brunswick, GA and then Jacksonville, Fl.

Unless you are driving towards the miami area, why bother stopping.

Savannah onthe river. Do it

agreed on that statement. Savannah is amazing. If you are brining your SO you won't regret it. Far better than almost all places in Florida besides the keys(not Key West).

Unless you're leaving at 6 pm, after getting out of work, why would you bother stopping, except once to top off the gas?

11 hours is really long. I don't think that's a good idea to do that in one day.

I'm currently staying at the Comfort Inn right off exit 104 just outside the Savannah Airport. Just been here a week but haven't notice anything that would lead me to believe it's sketchy. Being a Seattle guy, the hot humid weather here though is a real turnoff.

Savannah is one of the coolest cities in the country. You should stop there, stay near the river walk, and venture up into some of the city squares. It's truly awesome.

Seriously??!

Wait, never mind, I remember a certain someone in the forums whining about having to work four 6-hour days in a row. Wild guess - you live in a very urban area and average less than an hour each week in your car.

This is what I was going to say. In a nearly 30' truck with a 10 year old wanting to stop constantly; I went from Columbia, SC to WPB, FL...it was between 9 and 10 hours.

In my M3 I did it in exactly 6 hours. Kids do not try this at home. Fortunately I was able to *cough* find enough private roads north.

When I said in Savannah for business we were locked into a block with everything we needed at the hotel. I understand it's just the coastal areas that are nice. They recommended we don't leave the property.

Then I had to drive to Albany, GA and ended up in a gas station that had bullet-proof glass thicker than any bank I have been too and only took bills and change through a narrow slot. They actually scanned the items through that glass.

Because my 3yo is coming with me. Meals, potty breaks, and some play time is going to stretch that 11 hours into 15+ hours.
