I-40 Winston-Salem to Raleigh or US Rt.460 across VA

I can either take I-40 most of the way across North Carolina or US 460 most of the way across Virginia to the Outer Banks for a vacation next week. Does anyone here have any experience driving one or both of those routes and how would you describe the driving experience?

Keep in mind that I am a white knuckle driver when it comes to a very crowded fast moving interstate around a busy city where people are zipping across lanes of traffic to get to exits on either side. Like say I-95 around Washington, D.C.. I can manage it, but I despise every minute of it.

I drove from Winston-Salem to the eastern side of Greensboro on I-40 once, and I hated driving on I-40 around Greensboro because exchanges were not marked very well in advance. I've never driven I-64/I-664 around the Hampton Roads/Norfolk/Portsmouth area.

Anyone have any info or advice about either of these routes?

40 is okay, but it doesn't go to the Outer Banks. It goes to Wilmington.

You'll take 40 to Raleigh, then take 440 to 64, and 64 to the Outer Banks.

Well, you say you don't like the speed and 64 can get fast. It can also be at a dead stop so it's a coin toss.

Also, I-40 has cleaned up a bit between Winston and Raleigh. There's a new bypass in Greensboro if you're going straight through- beats going through the city.

That stretch was a BITCH between Lee St and the I-40/I-85 split after 4:00PM. It was even worse on Fridays. The new bypass solves that problem majorly.

460 is slow. You will have to slow down everytime the speed limit drops to 35 while going through multiple podunk towns.

Thanks guys. I'm glad to hear that they have a bypass around the worst of Greensboro's traffic, I hated driving through there the few times I have. Is it just called the I-40 Bypass or some other route?

Yeah, slsmnaz, I was thinking it might be a good idea to avoid 64/664 because I'd heard the traffic could come to a standstill there a lot of the time.

rudder, I'd wondered about that. I guess there are a lot of speed traps along that route.

Sounds like I'll take I-40 to US 64E. Thanks again!
