Depends. If it's something that can be quickly fixed that's one thing, but to spend a lot of time and energy it's just not worth it IMHO. My time is worth way more than money.

I could:
1) pay to have it picked up properly
2) pay to have a guy look at it (service charge + parts...)
3) leave the old one in the alley for somebody that has the skills and time to work on it.

I go with 3, best for everyone. It gets "recycled" (reused), and I don't have to pay for pickup or fixing it.

Sounds like littering.

I left a 42" flatscreen with a bad capacitor on the curbside a few weeks ago.

more power to whoever takes it... it was time for me to replace/upgrade it anyways, none of my friends wanted to take it off my hands (or at least, none of my friends who could also come to my house and pick it up themselves -- I wasn't going to waste half a tank of gas driving to the other end of the state just to give someone a free tv), and I had no use for it myself, so I left it on the curb.

more power to whoever picked it up and repaired it, I hope they're enjoying it. :thumbsup:
