Interstate 15 in Hesperia is expected to remain closed in both directions for up to two days after a fire was accidentally ignited by a worker at a bridge construction site Monday.

The freeway - Southern California's main connector to Las Vegas - was closed around 1:30 p.m. because of falling debris.

Officials said drivers should stay away from the Cajon Pass, which is just south of the area of Interstate 15 closed by the fire. Traffic was backed up 6 miles to the south and up to 20 miles to the north Monday evening.

The blaze was started when a construction worker's blowtorch accidentally ignited the wooden supports of the Ranchero Road overpass bridge, said San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Josh Wilkins.

Sounds more like it burnt down, to me.

Wooden bridge?

Nah...plywood and timbers for falsework. They use the timbers and steel beams for support...then use the plywood for forms to pour concrete.

FWIW, MOST of those concrete bridges you drive across on the freeway, or overpasses...those are hollow...with about 12" reinforced concrete decks and walls...the center is hollow.

There are something like half a dozen points where something like a fire, say a tanker truck set on fire under a bridge or overpass so its structurally weakened, and whole USA gets fubar due to all the truck traffic through those points.

Going around Cajon pass is close to insanity, hundreds of miles to get around it.

Obama wanted to employ Americans to fix our infrastructure but the Republicans voted against it .

Looks like the slide to 3rd world status is already happening. :(

Once you get there I am sure the struggle will seem worth it.

I-15 is also the link between the western end of I-40 in Barstow and southern Ca. although many of the freight trailers travel on trains now over the longer distances.
