2nd highest grade in the class baby (cse 321, discrete structures)... 1 of 5 4.0s in the class

whoooo.

for those of you that don't know, i'm trying to get into the computer science department here at the UW... *the* most competitive major to get into. that said, i've applied twice, been rejected twice. that's because i screwed up big time frosh and soph and my GPA is a 3.39... the result of calculus, latin, chemistry, depression, and apathy.

the first time they said they were concerned about my math grades (understandable) so they rec'ed i take math 308 (linear algebra). 4.0'ed it, one of the easiest classes i've taken. but i STILL got rejected... the second time, they said "you were really close to making it in... if you take this majors-only course, do decent in it (3.5+), and apply a third time, there is no reason you wouldn't get in"

anyways i know this is such BS, because i *know* i am smarter than at least 90% of the people in CS, and because i *know* i am more passionate than the vast majority of the people in CS (if you're worried about the economy, you're in it for the wrong reasons imo), but what can i do... it's my fault my GPA is f*cked up. my GPA over the last year has been more like 3.8-3.9, so you can imagine what it was like before that. but i digres. so anyways i take the course... and kick ass. this oughta show 'em :)

that said, this is one of the easier CS classes... i'm surprised the other people didn't do better.

edit: just found out i got a 4.0 in math/stat 390 (probability and statistics for scientists and engineers) w00t!

Here's the best of both worlds.
Go challenege everyone applying for the program at CS and the last 10 people who live in CS get into CS

Uh... you're an idiot if you believe this. I know PLENTY of people in which Computer Science was their life but they are worried about the economy and rightly they should be. They are currently jobless. [These are Stanford, Berkeley graduates]

HEADSHOT

I am also a CS major :). Freshman year at Kettering University. Its a co-op school which means I go to school for 3 months then work for 3 months. By the time I graduate (its a 5 year program) I will have almost 3 years of REAL work experience and 5 years of seniority at the company I work at. The problem with traditional schools is that you only get book knowledge and when you first get hired the company has to spend 1-2 years training you to do your job. You are going to have a really tough time finding an entry level job that requires no previous experience. I got put right into Java 2 because I got a 5 on my AP C++ test (no previous java experience, whats up with that???) and I managed to get an 87 overall. I am happy with that because I had never even tried to do anything in java before. I was suprised at the number of people in my Java 2 class (mostly sophmores, or juniors with CE majors) who did WORSE than I did! Some people even failed the class! How is it possible for someone to pass Java 1 but fail Java 2? I think that most of the concepts were similar. I guess some people just have betting programming mind sets than others. Anyways, one of the good things about Kettering is that you dont have to take a test to get into your major, you just start taking the classes right away and if you arent fit to take them, you fail out. Its as simple as that. Next semester is going to be rough for me, I have to take Calc 2, Discreet mathmatics, and Systems programming concepts!

Because I think there comes a point when you make a realization, an epiphany if you will, that the industry SUCKS and sitting in front of the computer all day long isn't cracked up to what it was supposed to be... so they are trying other avenues... lawyers, doctors, etc. I know for a fact these guys LOVE Computer Science and still do... programming since kindergarden, but the economy is tough. And so they're adapting to it.

Also, I don't know if you've been out in the job market but its TOUGH to find a job. The Tech industry is so UNSECURE.
