I'm looking at a 2000 Elantra with 20k on it right now. Took it for a test drive and it was nice, but I'd like to hear some first hand opinions on it.

Any Elantra owners out there?

Thanks

I'm interested as well.
I think the only knocks on the car is lack of side airbags, poor collision performance in testing, and then the poor resale value as well.

Check epinions.com for some reviews.

Friend at work as an '02 Elantra GT. It looks nice and he really loves it. He hasn't had any problems with it thus far.

We need more info

Is it being sold from a dealer or private owner?
How did you find the car?
Which trim is it GLS, GT or other?
Automatic or manual transmission?
4 door sedan, right?
Price?

Agreed, give us some more information.

Having said that, a friend of mine has a 01 Elantra GLS, it's pretty nice. I think the car is stylish personally (the GLS, not the GT, I don't like the hatchback look). They do have horrible resale value on them though.

Very true. I would buy the Elantra only if it's in excellent shape, the warranty and roadside assistance are transferrable AND you get a killer deal.

Are you sure? I thought one of the "gotchas" with buying a Hyundai was that the great warranty is not transferrable and they're pretty much banking on most people selling them after 3-5 years before they really get into the heavy repairs....

I don't know for sure but I thought the Hyundai warranty and roadside assistance were transferrable. If they're not then the car had better be in immaculate condition and a great deal if I were to buy it.

Also make sure to ask if it's a CLEAN TITLE or SALVAGED TITLE.

I've seen several 2000-2001 Hyundai Elantra's going for $6k here but the catch is the car has been in an accident and is a SALVAGED TITLE which you don't wanna touch with a 100 foot pole.

I think the 2nd hand warranty is good for 5 years/50,000 from time of purchase. So, he'd have roughly 3 years, and 30,000 miles left on the warranty. Still not a bad deal. It's only 6k less than NEW domestic warranties (GM, Ford, Dodge)

I have a 98 Elantra that I bought beginning of last year (January 01). I've put almost 34k miles into it since then, it runs great.

This article seems to support that notion, although it may be powertrain only. Of course that's more than you'd get on a lot of other used cars, so.....

I think they're good value. If the price is right and you fully understand and accept the warranty changes, then it's probably good.

I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and it's been great. 42k miles since April 2001 and I haven't had one problem except a headlight went out. But the dealer replaced it for free (it's not under warranty) and gave me a carwash. I used the roadside assistance at 11p.m. on a Sunday night and they came within 20 minutes.

I say go for it! As long as the car your looking at is in good condition.

Thanks for all of the replies so far everyone!

Anyhow, I'm looking at a 2000 with 25,646 to be exact and it's the GLS. It's in very good condition except for a "scrape" in the paint on the back bumper (~3 inches).

AAt a dealer their asking 9,465 for it.

Oh, and it's automatic. Now there are other alternatives as far as Elantras go there on the lot but this one caught my eye.

I've read reviews and people are generally happy with it although mostly it's "great for such a low price".

Well it's not no BMW "Ultimate Driving Machine" but if you're just looking for a good-enough daily driving machine, it's perfect.
