My little Civic is nickel and dime'n me so I decided to get a new car. I'm probably going to purchase a 2008 Hyundai Accent GS and I was wondering if anyone had any experience on these cars.

Car info:

3 door hatch
manual
good warranty

dealer price around 11.8k with rebates, I'm throwing 5k down and financing the rest.

I was also wondering if you guys had any suggestions on any other cars within that range or slightly below it. I don't want a used car, I want a new car that I can keep for a very long time.

Thanks!

While the Accent is a nice basic car, for not much more you could get an Elantra which is a much nicer car that has more standard features and gets just about the same gas mileage.

Honda Fit! Probably the best resale out of the lot, if that's important to you at all. If no, then drive the Accent until the wheels come off, it will be a decent car but be worthless in a few years.

I own a Versa
After lots of research, the Fit and Versa are equals but different .
The Yaris/Accent/Aveo's are relative equals
You won't get a Versa or Fit for the price he said he wanted to pay.
You can get the bottom 3 for that though

If it drives anything like the Sonata (I rented one last week) you will fall asleep from the boredom of driving it.

Aside from that the price seems right. You should also consider something slightly used that is as efficient and more enjoyable to drive.

Buy a Versa by Nissan - About $2,500 off MSRP are the current deals.

6spd Manual trans
Decent HP @122
Roomiest interior of all the sub-compacts
Nice sized cargo-hauling capcity!

I'd say go for it. The new model Hyundai's have been getting really high marks. As it stands, you should be able to get one cheaper than you would the fit or versa.

My uncle is a preacher who travels to congregations all over the US.

His Hyundai has 300,000 plus miles. . . . still starts just fine.

I would get a Fit or a Versa, but they are a little outside my price range... I'm looking toward the 135 - 150 bucks a month range for a four year finance. That is very feasible with the Accent, not as feasible with the Yaris. Thanks for all the info and suggestions, I just needed to hear some opinions about the car.

My wife had an Accent sedan that she drove until the wheels came off. It was a great little car and you can't beat the warranty.

A base Versa is $13,500 including destination:
122-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine
60/40 Split fold-down rear seatbacks
Air conditioning with in-cabin microfilter
AM/FM/CD audio system
Roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags
Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags

Rebates & discounts can be had and its a far superior car to the accent.

If you really want to go cheap I've seen AVEOS for $7,990 for a base model.

I rented an accent a while ago, and I was really impressed. It was a nice little car, comfortable and well designed. It had a bunch of storage for a small car.

I agree...those damn things are sharp! I'm almost bummed I didn't go for one...vs. my R32. :D

Seriously though, they are built like tanks (engine and transmission-wise) and there is quite a mod-scene coming out for them.

I'd definetly go for a fit...or a Rabbit. I'm partial to VWs.

Seriously, check out the Fit.

The Accents are great because of the warranty, BUT, the warrant is really only worthwhile if you plan on keeping it a long, long time. It is NOT transferrable so the resale values are pretty lousy as the warranty is the main "selling point".

I understand what you are saying about the Fit, but its 15k around here and theres no incentives. If I were to spend that amount of money I'd just go for a base model Civic.

On the Versa, I'll check out a dealership this weekend and see how low they are willing to go. I will also be checking out the new Focus.

Oh and the reason I was going for the Accent was the warranty, its pretty nice. Not worried about the resale value because I'm going to keep it till it dies.

I'd get the accent, but I'm already a pretty happy owner of an elantra (as some one else mentioned, it costs almost nothing more and gets almost the same mileage...when we bought the accent was new for the model year and the elantra was on the last year before changeover so the accent cost more).

Hyundais are pretty loaded up with standard features now and that warrenty is sweet. I actually checked out the accent the other day and it has all around air bags standard which is nice (although I think this is becoming industry standard) They're great bang for the buck for basic transportation. But, the resale value IS crap. Not a concern for me since I plan to drive it into the ground and I feel like I saved the money on the front end anyway, but for some people thats a big deal.

I've got an '08 Focus, it's been flawless so far. The main complaint about the Focus seems to be the somewhat weird styling, and the fact that it's not the awesome Euro C1 model, and there's no hatch/ST/SVT model either. The '08 Focus for the US is an update to the previous chassis/drivetrain, which is excellent because it was already REALLY good. Very well-balanced, great handling, etc.

They're great little cars, and it gets 30+ mpg for me in combined driving (mostly city actually), and it's peppy enough. The coupe S is 2550lbs, pretty light compared to many others in the class.

That said, the resale value isn't much more than a Hyundai really, and unless you stack on the incentives/bargains/etc, there's not a real reason to choose a Focus over something like a Fit, outside of a couple areas. The stock Focus has a 140hp/136tq 2.0 Duratec motor, and it has pretty strong internals. With the 5spd, it's surprisingly capable of decent performance. The Fit, while a wonderful car, has ~115hp or so, but has more interior room and even better fuel economy, plus resale value up the wazoo, and Honda reliability.

I drove a Nissan Versa today and I fell in love with it. I'm pretty sure that it's going to be the car of choice and the dealer gave me a quote at 13k out the door before taxes. So I'm leaning heavily towards the Versa now.

Arkaign, I drove the Focus today as well, but it wasn't as nice as the Versa and they quoted me at 12.5k. The clutch on the Versa was much lighter and more responsive plus it drove much smoother than the Focus.

I think the 500 dollars is worth the Versa.

At my Ford Dealer - Every single Focus is $5K off MSRP ~ not sure what a base model Focus goes for though.

And did you test drive the Versa sedan or hatch? Glad I could recommend it!

I drove a Versa hatch and it was awesome. Great car, I hope everything goes to plan. The Focus was not a bad car at all, but the clutch was kinda picky and the price was just a little too steep for nothing in the car besides AC and a radio, but I could be getting to money tight by saying that. It was a solid ride though, 70 at ~2.3k rpm and it was pretty silent. But the Versa was really quite and it felt sturdier than the Focus.
