Hypothetically... could an NHL team use a SUPER-large guy for goalie?

You know, a man so huge that he literally covers the entire goal? He'd just have to stand there and make sure to not move, as to not create any openings in the goal.

Or is there a rule that says each piece of goalie equipment can't be bigger than [random dimension]? Which would make it so the stuff wouldn't even fit on the guy...

There are maximums on the dimensions of equipment, and the guy would have to pass a physical.

What physical? Can you stand there like a blob and not move? "yeah, bring me a stool"

The physical to be allowed to play in the league.

The goal is 72" across.

Goalie equipment rules change almost every year. This year I think they took off an inch or so off of the sides of the leg pads this year. All to increase scoring-->happeir fans-->ratings-->cash for the league/teams/owners/players.

At 72"s you would be pretty hard up to find someone to full the goal w/o moving. If they have to move, they will be too slow and would get scored on frequetnly.

Remember, the goalie would have to fill 72"s not only at his chest, but feet too.

My son's mother could fill that goal easily. And still reach over and snatch the popcorn out of the hands of the guy in the first row.

I don't know if you guys have ever actually watched an NHL game... But those guys can put the puck in even the smallest of openings.

There's no way a huge fat guy could be successful.

This reminds me of a current commercial on television (wish I could remember what product it was for) where a big dude covers almost the whole goal; they show pucks being deflected by his non-moving frame.

edit: oh and no pics please

hypothetically...yes. Realistically...no. A goalie has to be flexible and quick. Leg kick....butterfly....glove save....butterfly!

I am not sure a person of this size would have the endurance to stand out there for 60 minutes wearing all that equipment, either.

Yes, there are dimension restrictions on the pads/equipment and they seem to get smaller every year.

Smaller every year recently after getting bigger and bigger for decades. Ever seen an old school hockey game? The pads the goalies wore back then are just an inch or so wider than the shin pads skaters wear today.

We played pick up games in the old days (no helmets) without pads and gloves.

Shin guards were the Sunday paper taped under our jeans.

That was for safety reasons, with newer plastics and padding it's not longer necessary. When was the last time you heard of a goalie getting injured because of lack of protection (recently)? Now compare that 'expected' injuries in any other position, heck any sport...

Now scoring is the issue.

Hypothetically, what if humans developed the power of telekinesis, and could stop the puck from entering the goal with their minds? Wouldn't that just screw hockey over?

in my intramural floor hockey league, we had a big guy playing goalie and he put up like a .8 GAA or something like that.

but in the NHL, they can seriously thread that puck through any opening, you'd have to be one fat duck to cover that goal.

That's kind of wierd, Nabokov isn't that big - 200 lbs. Hasek is like 180. Cechmanek is the biggest goalie I can think of off hand, he is listed at 211 lbs on yahoo.

I think people are underestimating the size of the goal... its 4 feet by 6 feet. Even a huge sumo wrestler would leave holes around the edges. Plenty of space for most top wingers.
