I used to wonder the same thing when I was younger. I would imagine lots of sparks and smoke would result though.

most transmissions don't have a synchronized reverse, so it's unlikely you would be able to get it to go in gear. if you did, it would either demolish the transmission, or slip the clutch or lock up the wheels, or a combination of the 3

It was once suggested to me that if you were, say, in 5th gear, pushed the clutch in, somehow lifted the ring on the stick (or lockout equivellent), put it in reverse, and let the clutch out you would probably be seeing your transmission on the road behind you.


Realistically, nothing so grandiose but I would imagine that if the tranny didn't fail it would suffer severe damage - if not the engine trying to apply its power to stop a car moving at 80mph.

Yes, you would shred the gear and the debris would likely kill the rest of the tranny.

Most trans's have a lockout inside the box to not allow this to happen. I've tried to no avail to make such a thing happen.
