Hypothetical Situation with my Iphone

I'm pretty sure this will come up eventually if it hasn't already but I was just thinking about the two year plan you're forced to sign up for in order to activate your iphone.

what happens if you lose your iphone and buy a replacement? Do you need to re-renew your two year contract to activate your replacement phone?

What about if your decide to upgrade to the 3G version when it comes out?

I know you can always jail break your phone and all but I was just wondering about Apple's official policy regarding these situations.

Well since the iPhone isn't subsidized by AT&T, the contract works a bit differently.

Normally when you sign up and get a new phone, your two year contract starts and in 22 months you can upgrade your phone. With the iPhone, the two year contract stars the day you activate it, but it dosent lock you into the iPhone for 22 months, you can use your upgrade at any time (like if you lose your iPhone)

Also the contracts dont stack, so if you lose your iPhone 4 months into the two year contras and you decide to get a new subsidized phone and resign a contract, the two years stars running from that date (so 24 months from that date 4 months in)

Hope this makes sense!

IIRC, I remember reading that if you get a new iphone, and you already have a contract, you can just hook your iphone up to itunes and it will resync with your account. I think when apple just came out with the newer phone, people were getting screwed by AT&T when they were told that using the new phone would extend your contract.

That is exactly my concern, It'd be great if I can just plug in my hypothetical new iphone and not have to re-extend my 2 year contract. Is there any official press release on this matter? I was looking on Apple's website and couldn't find any.
