Suicide is illegal? What are they going to do bring your body to court and sentence you?

You know if more people minded their own damn business instead of trying to own every woman in America's vaginas we wouldn't have this problem.

Troll.

How about we recognize that abortions will happen anyway regardless of law and that making it illegal will only result in more women seeking unsafe abortions and dying?

I think the real question we should be asking is: What drives people into situations where they are desperate enough to kill themselves or get an abortion?

What people are fighting over now is when a baby is considered a living object. Catholics believe it's the point of conception (penis + vagina + baby batter = screwed). Others believe that killiing something that does not even have heart beat yet, is not killing at all.

Uh.... MOST abortions can't occur until at least the 7th week. At that point, there is a heart beat. Try again.

Damn. It saddens me to see some of the stances taken in this thread.

Bottom line for me is this:

It's going to happen whether legal or not. Illegalizing abortion will not make them stop. As a liberal, I'd rather fund programs that help reduce the number of abortions rather than criminalizing women who have made their own decision. It is not up to us to justify their actions.

What is so fucked up is that conservatives are so backwards on this issue. They are all about keeping government out of our private lives, yet they cling to this issue. It really annoys the shit out of me.

You assume that women who choose to have an abortion think it is a happy occasion, and perhaps one worth repeating.

Of course, many people here think you are wrong...

I assumed nothing. And you failed terribly at putting words into my mouth. I said "specified" time, meaning not always/

Amazingly (though not surprisingly), you disregard the intent of my response and ignore the issue that I am addressing with your comment. I guess quoting me out of context is one manner of your attack, a method of confusing the issue and distorting general perception.

Here is your comment that I am responding to:

Funny how you never responded to the fact that I said the primary reason behind pro-abortion opinions is simply the right to choose, a liberal attack line.

now, looking at my response that you quoted, how does my response seem relevant in regard to time of life? I'm responding to your confusion over the values of pro choice, versus the perverted interpretation of that issue into one of pro-abortion.

again, learn to read, contextualize, and you might be worthwhile in a debate. You certainly aren't at this point.

so, to re-clarify: There is no pro-abortion opinion; at least not in liberal, pro-choice circles. PRO-CHOICE /= PRO-ABORTION[/b]

Do you honestly think that the majority of women who choose abortions do so happily? That they will continue to abort fetuses because they derive so much pleasure?

You can waste as much time as you want claiming that "so many women use abortion as birth control," without ever backing up this worthless opinion, then responding to calls to present your data with "can't prove a negative, nah nah nah nah boo boo."

Of course, you would probably never realize that claiming such an activity is prevalent and statistically significant puts the burden of proof on you to back up this claim. Otherwise, the argument is invalid and unworthy of debate, much less support for policy.

Right on man.

Wiki
Murder is the unlawful killing of another human person with malice aforethought, as defined in Common Law countries. Murder is generally distinguished from other forms of homicide by the elements of malice aforethought and the lack of lawful justification.

Wrong. You want to go back further:

Why'd the girl get knocked up in the first place?

Because she wanted to have sex and the condom broke or the birth control failed?

Sex is not a sin, sex is not automatically or exclusively for the purpose of child production, and having sex does not automatically mean that one is able or willing to rear a child. Wether or not you contend it SHOULD be any of the above, it isn't.

Now, from fact to opinion: Birthing an unwanted child and giving it away is worse for the mother and worse for society. A pile of cells that won't be self aware for years after it's born doesn't have a say in the matter.

STFU already. Again, I assumed nothing and that is all I am going to say regarding that statement. Furthermore, I'm not here to read your mind. State clearly what you mean next time. Finally, the original comment you posted simply states "the right to choose". Nothing more nothing less. you're reading too much into things. For example, if I was a woman and I accidently got pregnant and did not want the child, I would be pro-abortion in that instance. Your fuzzy logic of being against something while you're for it is stupid. Either you are or you aren't.

BTW, I created this thread on the belief that both should be legal or illegal. There are laws against euthanesia in America but federal law allows abortion. To me the two are not dissimilar.

The problem with this thread is that there aren't enough inputs from women.

I've never met a woman that was not pro-choice some degree.

I've met a few...they are usually overweight...by a few hundred pounds and think they know what's best for everyone in society and love to tell anyone who will listen.

It's actually very simple. Without getting into my opinions on the subject, those that support legal abortions do not consider a zygote/fetus to be a human, and therefore, it is not murder.

Also, are you seriously dumb enough to think it's a "cut and dry case"? Have you ever watched a political debate?

edit: also, why is your point of reference suicide? Most people would go to murder as being a more apt comparison since abortion is much more akin to killing another person than yourself. I get the whole "right to choose/its my body why can't I have an abortion or kill myself" thing you're going for, but wow. I stand by my first statement (dumbest thread of the century).
