Hypothetical gas queston...

Okay, I'm driving to work today, and I think, "hey, whats gonna happen when gas is gone?" So, all of a sudden I visualize, on that interstate highway, everyone in a car riding a bike.

Just picture that for a second. I know its probably not even close to being an accurate picture of the future, but it's pretty interesting to think about.

I already know some people who bike to work, and it wouldnt be too ridiculous for me to do so as well (15 miles @ current job, 5 at old job).

Anyway, just sharing one of my clearly unrealistic, though interesting thoughts about the future.

 cheers

If we all had to ride bikes to work America's population would be halved overnight as our plethora of fatties would all have heart attacks as soon as they met a hill.

And electricity is magic. It just comes from thin air!!!
With no oil, we'd simply burn more coal. We have ~500 years of coal left. Heck coal can be converted into oil, producing synthetic oil at a cost of ~$30 to $35 per barrel.

Eventually though, more nuclear power plants would have to be built - and the government regulations that manke the nuclear plants unfeasible would have to be made into reasonable regulations.

Actually, at GE theyre developing high pressure goal powered turbines. I know you've seen the commercials for ge with the models in the coal mines, and the tagline "who thought coal could be so beautiful?" Well what theyre talking about is a method of superheating coal to remove the methane(i think) gas and then using that to power the turbines. These turbines are possible now due to the invention of new steel alloys that allow turbines to run at temperatures so hot that the blades in the turbine are actually on the verge of melting, and are COOLED by superheated steam (around 10000 degrees F) that is then used to power an auxiliary steam turbine, thus drawing more energy from the coal. All in all, I think its pretty awesoem technology, hence my sadness at having to leave for school.

Sounds great to me... I have a 25 mile commute to work though, so it would take me around an hour and a half to two hours twice a day.

EDIT: Then I just realized that I work for an auto manufacturer, and I wouldn't have this job if we run out of gas. Hmmmmm
