Hypothetically speaking, you're building a brand new sytem from scratch and you don't have any parts laying around. Intel and AMD has comparable performing CPU's at comparable prices. Neither their top of the lines are faster than either. which would you buy?

I vote for Intel myself. I dunno.. "Intel Inside" sounds better than Advaced Micro Devices blah blah.

Edit: put an emphasis on price

da top of da line(hey this is all imaginary)

AMD Pepsitron 20000+ at 16GHz or Intel, Pentonium 20GHz

I'd buy whichever was the best tool for the job I might need at the time. If there are architectural differences that makes one better for a specific task, and I needed that task, that's the one I'd probably buy, all else being equal. Now, back in the i440BX/PII/K6-2 days, for me it was pure Intel. But now my good box runs an Athlon XP...

hmm weird. AMD is more popular.

If there are no real differences between both CPU's, I'd select the CPU for which the best mainboards are available at that time. Otherwise I'd probably write both brands on a piece of paper, tape it against the wall and start throwing darts towards it without looking until I would have hit one of the names.

I would then choose the brand which was not hit.

I believe the average person would not see a difference between the two...I choose AMD.

AMD=Processor for the enthusiast? Techno Geek? Will they someday have a powerful server class spec that blows Intel away...(they're working on it)

Tough choice...I had Intel in previous Rig ...was looking for a change.

So I built a system recently and went for AMD... Athlon 1.4G

Low cost .. high performance

Never looked back.

thats kind of a silly comparison though, because amd seems to always have lower priced, and much higher performance cpu's... and even if someone were to just give me one or the other, I would choose amd (overclockable, etc). Its kinda pointless to add on all these good things to intel when they dont really exist (same performance, same price, etc). And its also funny to see with these add ons which dont exist, intel still loses :)

not that Im unhappy with my 450mhz PIII system, it has served me well :)

Intel..Reason..Better chipsets in my opinion. Of course I'd be almost as likely to buy an AMD. Overclocking has become a non factor due the diminishing returns as far as I'm concerned

Intel is a bit slower and more expensive, but I feel safer attaching a fan and over clocking them.

I also assume the P4 is way more OC-able.
Digital Jesus has his over 2.5 GHZ!

haven't checked prices recently... what are Intel 1.5GB going for??

I paid about $125 for a AMD Athlon 1.4GB CPU with HS and Fan.
Was able to OC it to 1.6GB.. not bad for a $125 !!

Very good point by Red. Overclocking is not even considered by me anymore, because of the low initial CPU prices. And AMDs run so damn hot, it seems like they're overclocked at default clock speed! I've got zero interest in multiple screaming fans, so screw the OC stuff. One slow RPM retail fan on the CPU and one fan in the PS is more than enough for the cheap, quiet, stable rigs I slap together.

PLEASE read the survey thoroughly. This is a hypotherical question and you're getting same amount of permance for $.

Yeah I like small footprint cases that are quiet and the Tbird really isn't the best choice for that kind of setup. I will add that my main Workstation is a 1.2 gig Tbird with multiple fans and SCSI Hardrives so you can bet the decible level is farly high:) But it's not OC'd because I can't see where the extra 200+MHz wouldn't be that much of a performance boost (unlike the old days when jumping from 300 to 450 )

Hard decision to make. If prices are the same and performance is the same, then I finally decided to go with Intel. They have much better support from M$ and their chipsets have been less prone to incompatibility and whatnot. Not to mention power issues :disgust: But if AMD changes their situation, then I might consider them just to support the under dog :)

I'd LOVE to support the underdog too, but those CPUs aren't pin compatible with Intel based chipset/mobos anymore. I'm NOT going to support the underdog at my expense. Time is money too, so I'll stick with what's tried & true.

So you're going to stick with motherboards that use BX Chipsets?

They are a fickle bunch. Who knows, this time next year they may there maybe a switch over to the dark side. The one thing that is refreshing that most aren't those annoying CPU Fanboys everybody hates.
