depends on what you backup. I use rsync to backup everything in my /etc /root /home directories. if the hadd dies, i toss on a fresh install of debian, then use my backup to reconfig the system the way it was before it died. you could use ghost to make an image of the partitions. FYI...grub does not play nice with ghost, you would need to boot from a floppy and reconfigure grub after you restored the image
