Why are you assuming again? This is not WW1 and WW2. We are fighting a bunch of guerillas and terrorists with a certain political ideology. To them, we are terrorists and to us, they are terrorists. Our government is diverting our attention from the real issues so they could enhance their own interests. People claim this is a war of civilizations, but it really is not. Just because a few do, does not mean they all do. It is just like a few Americans who are part of the KKK, or the Aryan Nations or other radical groups. We keep things under the carpet here, they do things openly - for the most part.

Hell, with the kidnapped of 2 Israel soldiers started a chain of events that lead to much lost of lives and properties, you would think an assassination of the Pope by Muslims would leads to a bigger ripple effects.
It might not start out as an outright war, but extremists on both sides will escalate their attacks/revenges/revenges on revenges that will lead to chaos and before you know it, major conflicts in a big way.

The world would move up a few hundred years. Catholics may begin to accept stem cell research to save lives, women won't have to be so secretive about getting abortions and harming themselves in the process, less Africans would contract AIDS because they wouldn't shy away as much from using condoms, and gays may just be seen in a slightly more equal light instead of being seen as diseased people.
