A lot of women these days take their new husband's last name and keep their maiden name, seperated by a hyphen (ie Mary Smith-Barney). What happen's when Mary Smith-Barney's son (Jim Smith-Barney) marries Julia Sweeney-Todd's daughter Sandy Sweeney Todd. Is Sandy's last name now Sandy Sweeney-Todd-Smith-Barney, or some derivation of these names?

Why would Julia Sweeney-Todd's daughter have both last names? She'd have the last name of her father only. At least that's the case of children whose mother has been in multiple marriages that I've seen.

Marriage should be for life. Two people who get married need to actually understand that is what marriage is- a lifelong unity.

Thus, the woman should simply take the last name of the man.

There could very well be a Julia Sweeney-Todd-Barney-Smith-Sanchez walking around, but it just should not be.

The only should that I think has to be followed in a marriage or any kind of relationship is a couple should treat each other with love and respect. Everything else is not important.

Why shouldn't the man take the woman's last name?

I'm not seeing the correlation between a lifelong union and the woman taking the man's name.....

I just asked a guy with dual last names and he said his mother kept her name, he got both names. If he married a girl with dual last names, he would strongly encourage her to just keep them and leave his off. His kids would probably just take one of the pairs, or one name from each pair.

there's no hyphen left when I am done with her...🙂

my wife just kept her name....my ex-wife took my name....doesn't change anything to me.
