HyperTransport Sync Flood Error

I have a system that works just fine in Windows. I installed Ubuntu 10.10, which worked until I installed the ATi drivers. Now it boots to the Ubuntu startup screen, then the screen flashes, and the computer restarts to HyperTransport Sync Flood Error. It still works fine in Windows. What is a sync flood error?

I don't even know where to start troubleshooting. It seems like it probably is software because it works fine in one OS, but not in another. However, it also seems like it might be a hardware issue, but that might just be a feeling :)

I had read that the BIOS might need updating, so I did update to the latest (v11.8), but other than that, I haven't found any good tips.

System specs:
Athlon II X4 640 @ stock 3.0GHz
MSI 785GM-P45 (not using the onboard video)
4x4GB DDR3-1333 @ stock 1.5 volts and auto timings
AMD Radeon 6850 @ stock with one DVI monitor

Thanks in advance!
