Hyperterminal or Comm Port Problem with Windows 2K

Has anyone experienced problems using terminal emulator, i.e. HyperTerminal, in Windows 2000? I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop running a PIII 800MHz and 512MB DRAM. It appears that receive data functions when connected to a RS232 port on another device, but nothing transmitted seems to get back any responses. Data loopback works so my guess is its a baud rate problem, or possibly an inversion.

Dell tech support gave up on this one. Said it was software related. I haven't contacted Microsoft yet.

I've never been so frustrated, I will have to use an older laptop (much older) until this is resolved.
