Hyper V question

I am planning on setting up a new VM guest for a SQL server and I was wondering:
Is it possible to expand the space allocated to a virtual hard disk at some point in the future, if the disk space is all preallocated?

It depends.
I've created fixed size drives when used with Virtualbox. When I had dynamic disks, it didn't work well with restoring backups, etc.

I also have found there to be a little more flexibility in vmware's solution than in Hyper-v. Though it is handy to have the tighter integration with windows AD, easier rollout (though it could be because I have just done more vmware and am familiar with it, more so than Hyper-v) and overall polish on the end product. So while you are in the planning stages, I would still consider something like the esxi solution or vmserver inside of windows host OS.

I have also found doing this in vmware is easier, but that gap is closing fairly quick, particularly for small or simple deployments like you are discussing. In regards to changing the vhd size, I use http://vmtoolkit.com/files/folders/converters/entry87.aspx to do that. It can resize the vhd sizes and also switch between fixed and dynamic.

cant resize the boot volume, but others will resize fine.

I never use this Tool, I only know that it exists.
