Hyper Threading question: Better for running one app?

Hi there,

I just noticed that after quitting a game I had been playing for a while and looking in task manager/performance, one of the logical CPUs had been at 100% usage while the other received minimal (1-3%) for the duration of the time I was playing the game.

My question is, does anyone know if I am getting full CPU performance when running a game using HT? I remember reading that in this situation, you are actually using all of the CPUs power, even though it's only showing the thread on one logical CPU.

I mainly play games so if HT is actually cutting down performance for running singular apps I will look into disabling it.

Thanks.

HT= while one part of the cpu is being used, other threads do not have to wait for it to finish waht its doin to use another part of the cpu (basically)

the game you were playin only used one part of the cpu, thats why it only showed 100% usage on that "CPU"
if you were running another program in the bg (lets say encoding a divx, assuming it doesnt use the same part as the game) it would say 100% on the other parts of the cpu

HT on one app with no other apps running may show little or no change....If it is compiled for it the one app may show a nice to no boost...if it is not compiled for it there have been test that show no to even slightly less performance....

HT is really for multiple apps.....one apps don't count on it....

For me....This is my scenario....

Running a Divx encode, DVD authoring encoding, or a transcode on a DVD....running the interent with downloading and posting going on....playing the TV on the computer and capturing to mpeg2 for later work....

The tv playing is usually less then 10% utilization...hit cpature with good mpeg stats and the cpu utiliz will hit 45-50%...the interent throws in another 3-10%...NOw trancoding a DVD, Divx encoding, or DVD authoring where it is being compiled to mpeg2 for DVD burning will all take 100% utilization if the cycles are available....I think I would be set to see a nice boost with HT on versus off....

Damn I need to get one and do this!!! ME SAD!!!!
