In my bios it says only to enable ht in with windows xp. Anyway I use win 2k and after installing the os, task manager does show 2 graphs. Does ht work in win 2k? does it work as weel as it does in xp? TIA.

I believe Windows XP has actual support for Hyper Threading... and Windows 2000 has support for multiple CPU's, which is what a HT enabled CPU looks like to the OS.

I think it's working. When I run P95 one of the graphs maxes out and task manager shows 50% cpu load. The comp is noticeably more responsive with P95 running then my A64 was too. I'm running P95 and 3dmark 2k1 now and its running smoothly most of the time, the games are taking a long time to load though...

I just got this system running and the only problem so far is that it scores 15.5k on 3dmark 2k1, I was expecting 20+ at least. CPU is idling at 65 - 70 and load at 85 C :). The gpu is 78 idle and also about 85 under load. This aria is a hot biotch.

Intel and Microsoft recommend you disable HT in Win 2000.

Hyper Threading isn't officially supported in Windows 2000 and its not optimized for HT like it is with XP or 2003 server.

The OS can't tell the difference between a physical second cpu and a logical (hyper threaded) cpu.

Without going into long details, this can result in applications actually running slower with HT enabled on 2K

Try running 3dmark without HT enabled and you should see a significant increase in your score.

win2k + HT = not getting full potential of processor

use xp and you'll notice a difference in your score...

or as canterwood said, disable HT for win2k and you'll notice a dramatic increase in your score... i made the same mistake too when i first got my p4 2.4C back in july of last year

Switching HT off gave me a 3dmark 2001 score of 18.something, almost 3k better then with ht on. Guess I'll finally have to give in and get XP now :).

Before you go spending cash, just note that your 3dmark score WONT improve with HT enabled in XP.

Gaming in general wont get any boost from HT.

Other apps (like video editing for example) should get a perfomance increase with HT in XP.

Its really down to what you do with your PC whether you need HT or not, but if your just solely a gamer, then its not really worth the upgrade IMO. :)

I watch tv while I play games, the tv tuner uses like 20% cpu (max, it seems to range from 8 to 20ish) and sometimes I want to encode and stuff while I watch tv too and it messed the tv up when I did that. Hopefully ht will help with that stuff...

Do I need xp pro or can I go with home... and wtf is with prices? BB/CompUSA/Circuit City all sell the full version of home for 200$ but every internet site has it for less then 100$... also whats the dif between retail and oem xp home?

EDIT: Googled it and it seems I'll need xp pro to do 2 procs (is 2 logical procs = 2 procs as far as xp is concerned?) but I'm still wondering about the oem thing. Does oem just mean microsoft doesn't support it? Can I still use windows update and stuff with the oem package?

Also, where are the best prices for xp pro? directron has it for 135...

OEM is just the software no retail box junk... and usually OEM is sold with one piece of hardware....

and yes you get all the benefits of updating and what not with the oem package...

as for the best price... check the FS/FT forums, lots of people sell their XP from their dell systems...

Just to clear up a point before you go spending to much....., you DO NOT need to buy XP Pro to support Hyper Threading.

XP Home supports ONE cpu but DOES support HT. (So you will see two cpu's in task manager and get the benefit of HT)

Hope this helps :)
