This is one of the best Tower Defense games I've played, and I've played a lot! It does a lot of stuff I don't like but it does the important stuff so well. I don't like the graphics, they are quite childlike and a bit fussy and generally it is just not one of the best looking games, but they get the job done. The sound and music also leaves a lot to be desired, although it is a lower budget game so stuff like this is to be expected. But the important stuff it does well, there is a very wide selection of towers and they work well, there is synergy between them, they can all be upgraded either in range or power or both, and between levels you can upgrade them even more and customize how you want them to work.
There are so many towers that you choose a selection of which ones you want to use each level. There is also a very impressive number of levels, and they are well made too. Some are simple where you just throw down some towers and that's it, but as you progress you unlock bigger maps which require mazes. There is a twist to the usual Tower Defense formula too because instead of just an entrance and exit and maybe a thing in between to protect, this game has multiple things in between to protect, and they act like waypoints that the creeps must go to before they can exit the level. So if you build the maze intelligently you can make the creeps need to take a very long journey before they get out, and as you progress through the game you will need to do this well. And the best bit is that you don't just place the towers, but you control a little robot guy who builds them and when you aren't building, you use him to shoot stuff. This is like your commander and there is a LOT of customization for this guy, even more than there is for the towers. You have a talent tree which you build up as you level up, and you can build him in many different ways. You have a variety of abilities he can use, so you can build him to boost those abilities, or you can build him to just have a stronger standard attack, or you can build to give him an aura that increases the damage or speed of the towers he stands near, or any mixture of the above.
Overall a really nice game. I was really disappointed with Defense Grid 2 which I played earlier this year. The first game was good but the second game I felt like it didn't really add anything new and yet it had very few levels. I think the graphics are nice in that game but the gameplay is what matters most and this game is all about the gameplay!
