Hybrid Drives

Has anyone seen anything lately on the status of hybrid HDD's? The last thing i saw was a few months ago, and didn't say a whole lot except that they are coming. I remember reading that MS will require all OEM's to use hybrid drives in their laptops running Vista, for speed reasons, leading me to believe that they will be come availible very soon to us, at least i would hope. It really sucks having 2GB ram and a 2ghz duo mated with a 5400rpm drive...

I can't believe you are complaining about your laptop a 7,200 drive isn't going to help performance that much and it's going to run hotter and louder therfore having a larger 120GB HD I think would be better than having probably a smaller 7,200 drive.

large 5400rpm drives really aren't that much slower than many desktop 7200rpm drives, simply because the laptop drives are denser. However, it would be very nice to have a hybrid drive. After all, the HDD is the slowest component by far in a computer.

Also, laptop 7200rpm drives are not hotter and louder, the difference is inperceptable.

Ok first off, go start reading the reviews on newegg for the 2.5" 7200rpm drives. there are very, very few people who said anything about an increase in noise. As a matter of fact, many said that they were quieter than the drive they were replacing. anyway, i never even said anything about upgrading to a 7200rpm drive. that wasn't the question. furthermore, i don't usually compute in an area where i will be shot if my decible output goes above 30, and i do not have heat problems or a concern about heat problems. As far as performance goes, the numbers don't lie. I am looking at a review on newegg right now for a inspiron 9300 user who upgraded from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm hdd, his boot time went from 35 seconds to 16 seconds. If that is not convincing, i don't know what is. I'm not sure why you lashed out like that, but my reasons for wanting a hard drive upgrade before Vista are definantly not unfounded.
