Hybrid bike

I'm looking to get a hybrid and the last bike I got was from Target when I was in jr. high. So, basically, I know nothing. Probably 90% of my ridding is going to be on pavement, but I'd like the flexibility to ride a dirt trail every now and again. And this is totally for casual use so I don't need some sort of uber-cycle or anything like that.

I'm in Los Angeles incase anyone has a favorite local bike shop.

i've actually been playing with this same idea myself.....to save on gas since it's not THAT far to school/work and it'd help me get in shape....so consider this thread marked!

I think he's talking about a mountain/road hybrid bike lol.

I have one. I got it on ebay for about $300 shipped a few years ago which was really good since anything even remotely like it was like $1200. They are pretty good, but the weight added will slow you down. Generlly these are best for uphills as it helps you battle uphill. Generally your better off with a regular bike for many reasons. A couple on the top is its less likely to get stolen, and you'll get more exercise. Bikes are extremely easy to steal no matter what lock you have on it. Also you don't have to worry about the battery and such which might cost more than the bike 😀

Damn...they make bikes that run on gas and electricity?? Where can I get one?

That's the first thing I thought of too. Didn't know they made such a thing.

i dunno.. hybrid bikes seem like at best they can go on a packed dirt path.. which i've seen ppl on road bikes get away with.. heh. My opinion is probably slightly biased from my buddy who mountain bikes... hybrids would fall apart even on the simple trails he took me on. heh. ok, they wouldn't fall apart, but you wouldn't really get anywhere.

And if I was planning on off-roading all the time I'd want a mountain bike but I'm not so I don't.

go to any bicycle shop (instead of x_mart), get their entry model, it'll most likely be a mountain bike.. ask for the tires to be swapped to 1.5" street tires and you're good to go
