HX520 or VX550?

I recently had to RMA my 520, so while waiting for it to arrive, I purchased a VX550.
The 520 has me a little paranoid about the modular connectors (the original problem for RMA) but i'm getting ready to get another case (V1000BW) & I don't want it too cramped in there.
Should I set aside my fears of modular PSU's & use the 520?
I assume either PSU is sufficient for my rig & both are good quality, but that modular thing. :disgust:

Well, having had three modular power supplies ( two HX620's and an Ultra X3 1kw), I'd honestly not worry at all about the modular aspect.....besides the excellent build quality, reliability, and stability of the Corsair HX's, the modular aspect is a major plus in my book.

BTW....what was the original problem with your HX520's connectors? I had one issue when I first set up my X3, but it turned out to only be one wire wasn't seated completely in the modular plug. After I finished seating it, had no other problems out of it. Have had no issues at all with either of my Corsair ps's.....

It seems one (or 2?) of the sockets wasn't putting out enough "juice".

Just by chance, was it from you getting a message when Windows boots up saying that your Nvidia (8800GT or GTS G92) video card wasn't getting enough power?

I'd bet that's probably it, Zap, since we all well know the HX520 is essentially a single rail ps that can put out all, well about all...after subtracting for the fixed cable useage, of its +12V output into any socket you choose to tap into.

No...I got no message at all...no display, no HDD activity, nothing.
I'm running a 7900GT.
I switched plugins (the cable the HDD's were on) from one socket to another & everything worked fine.

Odd, does that 7900GT take a 6 pin PCI-e cable or a standard 4 pin molex? And, are you saying that moving the HD cable caused the video card to start working also? Can you be more specific in your testing process?

It takes the regular PCI-e cable. I had no bios screen or anything.
All I know is that when I had the hdd cable mounted in one spot, the system would power up...PSU came on, fans came on...& that's it. When I moved the cable over, the system booted up fine.
I called tech support & they had me use the cable that had the fans on it (this was in a P182 & the cable w/the fans i'm referring to is the top & rear exhaust) & plug it in where I originally had the 2 hdd's (Hitachi 250GB & Maxtor 320GB) plugged in to see if it was putting out any voltage at all. It powered up the fans, but not the hdd's.
I'm no technician...all I know is that the cable didn't work in one spot but it did in another.

Ah, cool. I see you got in touch with TS already. Sounds like you had a problem getting 5v on that one header. Good luck with the RMA unit. I don't think you will have any further problems with the new unit. This is the first time I have seen this specific issue.

I'm just kinda paranoid about the modular thing...just something else, another part, that could fail...knowhuddamean?
I do like that fact, though, that I can use only the needed cables.

Yes, I know what you mean. Anything added is a possible failure point added. However, the tradeoff is only connecting necessary cables.

BTW, once you get your RMA back and decide on using one or the other, what are you going to do with your spare? If you decide to sell it for cheap enough, I call dibs!

I think I could learn to live without modularity for that kind of a deal!
