I was going to use my old RH9 Poweredge 600Sc for my "fool around with solaris and ZFS" project but looking at the hardware compatibility list it looks like support is kind of funky.

If I'm starting from scratch what's a "known good" list of parts for a cheap Solaris 10 CHEAP file server. Talking SATA/PATA drives integrated gig ether etc, cheap but functional CPU etc.... Learning project but also want in the end something serviceable on my home network.

Thanks for any input!

If you don't need the best performance, and want to "fool around" for learning reasons (but not learning about driver issues and hardware incompatibility), you might try running Solaris as a virtual OS, on VMWare Server for example.

You could get started with your current hardware, and might even find that experience helpful in getting a native installation working.
