So we decided to add ac to our furnace. Luckily, the builder already ran the electric wire for the heat pump, and installed cooling coil - so all we needed was a matching heat pump.

Or so we thought. Turns out the coil is an older unit that works only with r22 refrigerant. And the electric was only 30 amp, which limits the size of heat pump we can install. Argh, who does that.

Anyway, we got a couple of bids. One offers to replace coil and run new wire, and then install a modern heat pump. Pretty pricey.

The other one offers to reuse our existing wiring and coil. The found a trane builder grade heat pump that will work with 30 amp circuit. It is an r410 unit (like all new units are) - but they say they can "dry ship" it, and then run the unit with r22 to make it compatible with our existent coil.

Obviously, the 2nd option is cheaper - but the question is will I regret it later? Is running r22 in an r410 unit a bad idea?

You can run various refrigerants. Even in a car that has R134, you can run R12 or even propane. My Chrysler Town and Country I retrofitted to propane refrigerant many years ago and am very happy. Just get some professional advice on the correct type of oil and charge.
