I'm home for thanksgiving and I wanted to tear apart the carbs (despite the coming winter). I actually wasn't even able to get the carbs off of the bike due to the Mounting Bracket of Doom (MBoD) and a lack of daylight.

Here are the pics:

original

nekkid (no seat/gas tank)

close up of where the gas tank should be

choke cable

mounting bracket of doom - the screw to the back of the bracket is beginning to strip because it won't come out. any ideas on how to attack this one?

geared up and ready to ride - only if i actually could :brokenheart:

I remember when I was a teenager I took my dirt bike apart and forgot to put the locking bar back that holds the rear hub in place.

Put on the brakes on a gravel road and lockup as the brake control arm winds itself around the hub.

Those suzuki screws are made of butter. Buy an impact driver (about $30 from sears). They're pretty much required when working on any air cooled suzuki with those crap philip head screws. I'd replace them with stainless hex cap screws.

I miss my gs500..

Are you trying to remove those carbs individually?

They are meant to be removed as an assembly (all four with choke and throttle cables).
Then you can get to the bowls and git' er dun.

Cool. Isn't that the bike another ATOTer gave you?

BTW-It looks like someone did a crappy job sealing up that valve cover with a tube of blue gasket material. Next time you have the valve cover off I'd buy a proper gasket and use it instead.

Here's a tip for making old aluminum shine: 000 steel wool and some non-abrasive Mothers metal polish.

Edit-Why can't you ride? Too cold?

yeah, darkstar757 gave it to me :)

it has an oil leak(i knew beforehand), which from what i've read, is commonly due to the valve cover gasket, so i'll have to confirm that and replace if necessary.

i also have to:

clean the carbs
clean the gas tank (rust on inside :()
put in more brake fluid
oil/filter change

plus, it's getting a bit chilly here: 44F :(

edit: so i ordered a kickstand for my bike last night..... i started cleaning it today, and thought "well, where is that kickstand going to go?"

turns out it goes under the exhaust pipe on the left side. where a kickstand already is

so if anyone needs a kickstand for an 82-83 GS650, i'm your man! :D

IMO on a bike that old it's not worth por-ing the tank - clean it out with a bunch of BB's and put an inline fuel filter on it. Make sure to keep the tank full if you aren't riding it to prevent it from rusting further. Don't use any fuel additives as they will generally make the rust worse.

Actually after looking at the pics again - you don't need to remove that bracket. Loosen whatever cable that is and unhook it from the two fingers... (it looks like there's a lock nut on the back too)

Ok last thing - buy a tube of valve grinding paste. Dip the tip of your screwdriver/impact driver in it and it will 'grab' onto the screws much much better. Well worth the $3 or so.. You'll find it in any auto parts store near the rtv sealant and other tubes of goop. Also pick up a tube of dilectric grease to put in all of the electrical connections as you're working on it.
