So I live in St. Louis, and the Cardinals just won the Series. Yesterday a guy sends out an email to everyone in two buildings:

Subject: Cardinals Game download

If you didn?t know already but would like a copy of the World series game 5 or other wins for the Cardinals Go to the downloads section on MLB.com to get the entire game. ( to download when your at home )
The world series game is around 800MB and ready to put on your ipod

You will have to have an account, but it is free.

It's "Clinch Time"
Want to own the moment when your team made it to the League Championship Series?
Download full-game broadcasts >
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp

It was tough surfing yesterday. And the punch-line, 4 hours later?

Subject: RE: Cardinals Game download (Please dont download!!!)

All,

Please do not down load these files from the office. These files are huge and currently we have 15 people all downloading the same 45MB file shutting down our internet pipe for business purposes.

Thank you,
(IT Honcho)

No there were fifteen peoiple that had so far downloaded 45mbs of the 800mb file. It could be a small company.

You say that as if every company you've ever seen has an OC-48 dedicated to each workstation.

We've got something like 350 people, so we're not tiny, but we're not huge either. And yeah, that'll do it =)

well the guy who wrote it does say to download it at home.

True - but we've got plenty of liberal-use free network space - even a spot for passing crap like that back and forth. Don't you think it would have been a smarter move to just download it once and throw it out there for everyone?

If I were the IT Honcho, I would have immediately cut off access to the site. THEN I would have put in an exception for my IP, download it, and copy it to a local server. I would have followed up with an email to everyone they could now watch it off the server. Would have been the nice thing to do. 😉

your IT guy made it sound like it was a 45MB file.

but yes, I would have voted for hosting the file locally 🙂
