Hush my PC ... CPU fan suggestions please~

Hey, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. For almost a year now I have endured the bombastic sounds of my two fans inside my PC. Recently I've taken out the second fan on the side of the case but the loud noise persists. I have an ASUS A7V333 mobo with an Athlon XP 1800+ CPU that came with stock heatsink and fan. The fan is loud as hell and I would like to replace it with a milder if not much quieter but just as powerful fan. I don't overclock so high temp.'s will not be a problem but I still do not want a POS fan that's just quiet but not as effective for cooling. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

or try the SVC GC68/69

I checked up on the SLK-800 and Panaflo combo and everyone gives it rave reviews however I am not comfortable replacing the heatsink because I keep f'ing up the CPU or snapping something. Is it possible to just get a fan and put it over the stock heatsink?

Try the Vantec Aeroflow, as it should be ok for you. If you do get the SLK800, make sure your motherboard has the proper clearance so it's not bumping into resistors or blocking a RAM slot or two.

Since you don't want to replace the heatsink, how's about a 60-80mm adapter on your stock heatsink and a quiet 80mm fan? Then use a panaflo L1A or an Enermax adjustable (probably the quietest adjustable fan) so you can dial in your sound/temp level. I am assuming your heatsink takes a 60mm fan.

Instead of bumping....read back a few pages thru this forum....there are probably dozens of other posts like this, all with recommendations.

Personally, I like the Thermalright line of HS's. I have the following on various machines: AX7, SK7, and a SLK800(u) on the way. All of them are top of the line and perform beautifully with a quiet 25-30cfm fan.

I'll tell you right now, for a quiet PC, there isn't much better than the Zalmann 6000 (Pc Toys Quiet Maxx 6000). It keeps my XP 2400+ around 45C, 43 at idle, 48 at load, at all times, and also cools the motherboard. It is also whisper quiet, and when you set it to silent mode using the included FanMate Maxx, it is virtually inaudible. I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but this thing really doesn't dissappoint.

Last question, I promise. I realize there are various "mm" fans from 60 to 100+, so how can I determine whether an 80mm fan will fit my heatsink? I have an ASUS A7V333 mobo with an Athlon XP 1800+ cpu.

I had that exact same mobo and CPU. I had a Vantec VAC7040 or something, the one with the TMD fan, I still have the TMD fan cooling my SLK800 with the Barton 2500+ OC'ed to 2.2GHz, hasn't peaked over 40C yet.

I'm not as concenred about the temp. though as I don't OC or heavily use the system unless I'm multi-tasking with word proc. & winamp or playing AA 🙂 I'd prefer to have a much quieter sound because late at nights the PC is pretty loud and gets to me.

The HS I mentioned can take any size fan, but 92mm is recommended and included. For noise, trust me, there isn't much better.

Thanks. BTW i did look at the Pc Toys Quiet Maxx 6000 but at $35+ i am going to first try a substantially cheaper fan thats supposedly quiet. If it's not as quiet then I'll go with the QM 6000 or the SLK800.

So measure the fan on your heatsink. If it is 60mm, get a 60mm-80mm adapter and an 80mm fan.

I guess I shoul've mentioned how quiet it is, compared to a stock fan or that beast of a Vantec Tornado, this TMD is a godsend.
