Coming home from dropping a friend off we found This bird. He was hopping around on our lawn, but not flying off, so we knew something was wrong. On closer inspection we found a big wound in his side shown Here...
(caution, open wound picture)

Is there anything we can do for him short of taking it to a animal shelter / vet?

It it doomed?

EDIT: I left the bird on the sweater. It was dead when I woke up. Oh well.. at least he was warm.

i once found a bat on the sidewalk. i think it was still alive too. i just left it there to die, so i do not think you want my advice.

polysporon and bandage the wound 3 times a day i guess... let it chill in your house...

i dotn think theres much else you can do

if hes weak enough that you can hold him hes already a goner. put him out of his misery. bullet or garbage disposal will do.

Question..why avoid Al's Honda?

Dunno what we will do in the morning if he is alive. Its 3 am so the vet won't be around unless we call one up and pay big bucks. Being as my bro and I are college students thats not really an option.

Bird is sleeping what looks like comfortably in my bro's sweater on his floor. If he is alive in the morn we will take it from there.

I once raised a baby crow that fell out of a tree. Once it was full grown and able to fly, he was gone. It is possible to save it, just take it to a vet and ask him how bad hes injured. If he only has a minor injury just keep him in a large cage with some bird feeder and water till he is revived.

I don't get it - it's a friggin cheap bird. It's not like an eagle or something endangered. Why spend the time and money on it? Just feed it to your cat - let nature take over. It's called the food chain.

Could you maybe go to a vet? Maybe the wound isn't as serious as it looks. He could just need some antibiotics and a bandage for a few weeks.

Offer some water in the mean-time?

It's a pidgeon. I hate those birds.

My biology teacher told me to never help a wild animal (household pets are obviously an exception). Just let natural selection take place.

That being said, when my dog tore his ACL, we paid $1.5k to have surgery to get it fixed.

This is one of those situations where being a grown-up and hardening your heart is the right thing to do. Please put the bird out of its misery. Being a panty waist and keeping it alive because you feel sorry for it or you want to be a nice person and save it is, in reality, quite cruel.

take it to a vet, maybe.

Yes that is what I would do first. I personally know of 3 people who specialize in that sort of thing where I live.
