I have been in line for a step up and it says im the 5th person in line for a step up processing. Its been two hours, how long does this take?

Just curious, which GTX are you stepping up to? I was thinking of doing the same but will probably wait until it gets closer to the cutoff (hoping for a price break).

Just the regular GTX, I could overclock it to ultra speeds hopefully.

I highly doubt you'll see a price break from EVGA with the step-up program.

They use MSRP, not street price.

I paid $460 (frys B&M, kinda had to) and got a $60 rebate that I didnt turn in.

so I paid $160+ 15 shipping

That's why Step-Up is useless for people like me who wait till prices drop.

I was going to jump on that EVGA 8800GTS 640mb for $309 AR and then step up to the GTX, but I'd end up paying over $300 to step up to a GTX.

Even if I wanted to sell my GTS, I would probably pay a bigger difference for a GTX. It made pretty good sense to do it this way.

Yeahm, it makes perfect sense for you to step-up because you're getting your full $460 value for it.

The more you pay out the door for the original card, the more enticing step-up is.

Guess I'll just continue playing my Xbox360. 🙁

Just curious. Do they take into account rebates when they calculate the price difference for a step up?

I never could understand why the Step-up program was such a big deal. In the end you end up paying way more for the next card up. Would be different if they match prices to the lowest you can find.

I would say if you bought your card at Circuit City or Best Buy, the Step-up program might look better to you. Since most the time their prices are a joke...

Yeah it's worthless for most folks in the end because of its short duration. If it lasted 180 days or longer it would be more useful.

I know they don't use street price but I was hoping that the MSRP would drop. Then my step up cost would just be the difference from what I paid for my card. You don't think the MSRP will come down? I don't know because I've never done the step up before. I did read through their terms though and they say they don't cross ship which really sucks. You have to send your card back in and wait for the replacement.

I did step up from a frys purchase of a 7900gs with the sole intention of doing step up after r600 came out and prices dropped. Well R600 was ALOT later than I hoped but I still got a relatively good deal on a 8800gts640. At the time I did it, the last day of my stepup time, Retail on those things was only about 80 bucks less than what it was selling at new egg. Since I never turned in my rebate as well I only ended up adding about 160 bucks. Now one could argue that I payed 80 bucks more then I should of for that card but I got to use the 7900 and basically lose NO money on that purchase witch more than offset any losses of paying retail.

So yes do you pay retail, but you dont lose any of the value of your original purchase.

*I do miss my ol 7900gs though. I overclocked the piss out of it knowing that I would be returning it and was really happy with its performance. I got 7.5k 3dmarks from it with a e6600.


BTW OP, I was number 2 in the que when I started and it took over a month-yes a month- for the card to ship and for them to process my order even though they were more than willing to take my money right away. Dont expect it to be all done in a week like they say in the documentation.

Yeah, eVGA asks an awful high price for their cards direct. I think I'll just get a second GTS from the egg. Price/Performance of 2 GTS's is much greater than if I were to step up to a GTX.

The reason step-up can be useful is that the MSRP of a card could drop within 90 days of purchase. It's not useful to people who make good purchase decisions (e.g. buying an 8800GTS at a good price). It is useful to people who don't do their research and buy an 8800GTX for $600US two weeks before the 8900 series is released.

With your cooling (especially that strap-on fan), you should be able to clock the GTX to 626/1000. Not much higher though beyond that for the core.

Manimal's story is almost exactly the same as mine. Overpay on a 7900GS, sign up for step-up, and retail value dropped while I waited for my turn. Guess we got "lucky" lol...
