This thread is for the purpose of giving our best thoughts and prayers to those who won't be capable of evacuating the New Orleans area and to hope for their safety.

N.O. is totally fvcked if this thing is as bad as it sounds. It will be years before it's totally habitable again.

Good luck.

Aaron has not checked in for 4-5 hours. Hopefully it is just sleep and/or loss of connection.

Hi folks.

Typing from a washing machine in a gas station north of Baton Rouge.

I brought my D-Link and Laptop (plugged into their DSL Modem) and clothes is all I have now. First went to friends house that owns the station but they are on a rural road with a lot of trees and lose power during normal storms so the power went out last night at 10 pm.

Power has been flickering on the main hwy (61) here too. The Nuke plant is only a half mile away.

Not sure when can try to get back to see if anything of the house survived. I doubt if it did.

Your life and the clothes on your back may be more than many people escape with. :(

Good luck.

Looks like its now a cat 2. And not the damage as expected. CNN can stop its 24/7 coverage now and go back to the news. Its almost as if the news media is sad that the storm lightened up. They find it hard to give it up. Oh, our wonderful media!!!

New Orleans was very lucky that they were on the western side of the storm. If they were on the eastern side... /shudder.

Very true :(

They'll go back to coverage once they see that probably at least 500,000 homes & businesses destroyed and homeless to match.

I am probably one of the homeless.

I will get back down there as soon as it is safe after I load up with supplies.

And just think - only a couple of weeks ago, you were debting the value of your van w/ respect to fuel mileage.

At least it can become a roof over your head temporarily if needed.

Doing the same in a little toyota would be very uncomfortable.

WWLTV is only ones transmitting live Video.

They said they have not been able to hear from anyone on the North Shore where I live.

They have been repeatedly asking any Officials from there to contact them.

I know that the cell towers are down on the North Shore.

I've been able to partially log into the system.

Looks like BellSouth lost all circuits on the North Shore as well as the Metairie area.

WDSU is streaming, WWL has been down for the past ~20 minutes.

EDIT: Of course, I say that and WDSU's stream goes to sh1t. Oh well, it was all MS info for the past hour or so anyways. Not that I don't feel bad for those folks as well, but I want to know about my parents and friends' neighborhoods in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

Heard that the 17th St Canal at the New Orleans/Jefferson line breached, water at the roof tops all along Veterans Blvd.

There still has been no word from anyone at all on the North Shore.

I've heard the same about the 17th St Canal for the past few hours, which would mean my parents' and grandmother's houses are underwater and my mom's cats are probably dead. :(

I'm heading back to the official OT thread to keep it consolidated.

Wow, just saw some video of the damage. Looks pretty extensive in some areas. Many are predicting this to be one of the most costliest Hurricanes, damage estimates of $30billion+.

:(

I will be leading a crew that feeds the FEMA crew and Power crews into the town (Covington) just north of my house.

It is the town local ATer Gravity lives in.

We leave at 5:30 am.

I will re-fuel and attempt to see what happened to my home and then try to get to Metairie via I-55 if the Causeway is not open.

I-10 from Slidell to New Orleans was wiped out.
