What causes them to turn 90 degrees so fast?
Read the discussion . . . Hurricanes are "steered" by a combination of many forces that make up the weather . . . they have to interact with surrounding highs and lows . . . "something" made it turn. Here's part of the NWS reason:
JEANNE IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-SOUTHWEST OR 250 DEGREES AT 4
KNOTS. A STRONG DEEP-LAYER HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM CENTERED OVER THE
EASTERN UNITED STATES IS MOVING EASTWARD. THIS STRONG HIGH SHOULD
BEGIN TO FORCE JEANNE TO MOVE WESTWARD SOON...WITH A GRADUAL
INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED.

g'night

Hurricane-weary Florida in Jeanne's sights
MIAMI - Hurricane Jeanne appeared to be zeroing in on the Southeast coast Thursday, and forecasts put Florida firmly in the deadly storm?s sights with landfall possible this weekend.

While meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Jeanne and its 100-mph top sustained winds could hit as far north as the Carolinas, storm-battered Florida was a more likely target than it was a day earlier, said Eric Blake, a meteorologist at the hurricane center.

?It?s time for Floridians to seriously pay attention,? Blake said.

Can't these weather people get anything right?

They had this thing going out to sea and Ivan hitting Tampa.

If I was as wrong as these meteorologists are I'd be out of a job a long time ago.

The LATEST (5am) from the NWS

Still not sure about eXacrtly "where" (likely FL) . . . BUT it is getting STRONGER. . . .

THUS...THE INTENSITY
FORECAST SHOWS STRENGTHENING. INTENSITY GUIDANCE IS STILL
RELUCTANT TO FORECAST JEANNE MUCH ABOVE 95-100 KT...AND THE
INTENSITY FORECAST WILL SHOW 95 KT IN AGREEMENT WITH THIS.
HOWEVER...IT WOULD BE NO SURPRISE TO SEE JEANNE REACH MAJOR
HURRICANE STATUS IN 48-72 HR
GIVEN THE FORECAST OF THE STEERING CURRENTS...FLORIDA SHOULD PAY
CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE EVOLUTION OF JEANNE.
🙁

How often are your local weather forecasters right?

don't know what's more nuts...weather or the weathermen. A few years ago here in New York City, we had a blizzard. 36 inches of snow. I guess you Midwesterners would call that a dusting. Well, our weatherman at the time, Al Roker, predicted we'd have 4 - 12 inches of snow. Well, giving him the benefit of the doubt, that stills leaves him 2 feet off. This was an emergency condition. Now if you were a roofer and you built a roof and it was 2 feet off, you'd still be serving time.

Now, what's meteorologist mean in English. It means liar. And what's the best job you can have in the world. It's being the weatherperson in San Diego, CA. It doesn't get any better than that. You're on TV for less than a minute. You've got a 6-figure income. They're like 'what's the weather going to be like, Lewis?' 'Nice....back to you.'

Now the weather can be just as crazy. This past December in parts of the country where it should have been cold, it actually got into the 70's. What was that about? The 70's, in December? Do you know what that means, it's going to be in August? About 312. You're going to come home from work, the sun will be beating on your little heads, you'll be sweating like pigs, you'll go to the refrigerator, open it up to get something to drink and the eggs will be done. And then you'll think back to this moment you heard me and you'll think 'well, that guy wasn't that funny, but he was a prophet.'"

Hurricane paths are very hard to predict . . . .

I remember one near miss for Hawaii wandered all over the Eastern Pacific, moved across the dateline into a Typhoon and then became eXtropical - a huge cold front that eventually brought us waves . . .. three times i guess over about TWO months.

There are so MANY FACTORS that affect a hurricane's path - there are about 5 major "models" that attempt prediction . . . however, when they ALL agree - like now - there is trouble (for FLorida).

always READ the DISCUSSIONS . . . the forecasters always present their uncertainties together with their predicitions.

I got to "work" with and know some of these forecasters in Hawaii as my job was a Surf Forecaster from '95-'99.

That's my wifes name and just like her, she can become a hurricane at any time. She has a blackbelt in taikwondo!
